Direct Optimization of an Automotive Sheet Metal Part Using ANSYS

Abstract: Optimization of automotive parts nowadays is mainly used to design lightweight and cost-effective vehicle parts in order to improve the cost and efficiency. In this research, a sheet metal part was taken into consideration and optimized using direct optimization module in ANSYS to evaluate the process. An initial Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was done on the sheet metal part by adding forces and constraints in order to initiate direct optimization. The purpose of the optimization is to minimize the mass of the… Show more

“…Topology optimization uses constructive algorithms to reorganize the part in the design space therefore modifying the layout of the part into a complex structure that has higher performance [14] and lower cost due to low material requirements and this positively affects cost of manufacture by reducing waste, and cost of recycle. In the automotive industry for example, low weight and inferably low mass is an ideal trade-off for high performance vehicles such as the jet dragster, a jet-propelled car.…”

“…There are various methods to generate a cellular structure like model Boolean operation, implicit surfaces, topology optimization and image-based methods [12,13]. For the purpose of the present study, the cellular structure was constructed using the predefined options available on Ansys.…”
