Direct transretinal removal of subfoveal perfluorocarbon liquid combined with internal limiting membrane peeling

Abstract: A 65-year-old woman was referred to our institution with a 5-day history of visual impairment in her right eye and macula-off retinal detachment. A successful 23 G pars plana vitrectomy was performed with a 1000 cs silicone oil injection, and the silicone oil tamponade was extracted 2 months later. During the fundoscopic and optical coherence tomography examinations, three subfoveal perfluorocarbon liquid bubbles were detected, and her best corrected visual acuity was limited to 20/400. Brilliant blue staining… Show more

“…The mean time of the second surgery (performed for removal of submacular PFCL) was 9.80 ± 1.17 weeks (8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14) after the primary PPV surgery. The surgeries were combined with phacoemulsification and IOL implantation for 4 phakic patients (26.67 %), and silicon oil extraction for 13 patients (86.67 %) who had silicon oil endotamponade.…”

“…Re-detachment was not observed during the follow-up time. At the end of the followup time, the mean BCVA was 0.80 ± 0.11 logMAR (1.40-0.30) [0.91 ± 0.38 logMAR (1.30-0.30) for pseudophakic patients] and the mean IOP was 13.20 ± 1.89 mmHg (10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17). A significant increase in the mean BCVA was observed at the end of the followup time (p = 0.001 for all patients and p = 0.003 for pseudophakic patients).…”
