Direction finding system for automotive applications using small phased antenna array

Abstract: Direction finding technique for car location in large parking lots is presented.Method uses compact phased antenna array with two‐bit phase shifters. Proposed array operates as an intermediary between a car owner hand‐held unit and car electronic circuit with small omnidirectional antenna. Only one antenna array for all cars is that utilized for car finding service. Experimental results confirm math estimations and MATLAB simulation. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. “…Based on this concept, a phased array utilized for reception purposed in mobile communications can minimize the level of interference very efficiently as its main beam steers in the desired direction in order to disable penetration of all other incoming (undesired) signals transmitted from the side and back positions. The main beam's tilt direction of a phased array depends on the phase shift as well as the amplitude difference among the single elements that constitute the system [1]. As a result, the greatest advantage of this approach stems from dispensing with the need for mechanical movement, as the main beam of a phased array steers toward the desired direction [2].…”

“…An alternative approach is a system that determines the actual location of the car and sends a signal to the user that will show on a key fob (controller with lights and buttons) with his/her key chain pointing him/her to the correct direction of the location of the car. Reference [6] have proposed the design of a DF system based on a four element linear array antenna with phase shifters for beam scanning. The beam scanning ability of this system is highly limited by the linear nature of the array and thus cannot scan more than 180 • in the azimuth plane.…”
