Directional Optical Travelling Wave Antenna Based on Surface Plasmon Transmission Line

Abstract: Highly‐directional optical travelling wave antennas based on Ag nanowires are created, whose half‐power beamwidth is achieved as small as 20°. The radiation direction can be effectively adjusted over a range of up to 45.6° by changing the feeding surface plasmon modes, and they have an ultra‐broad bandwidth due to their nonresonant characteristic. A theoretical model based on mode coupling theory is constructed that can give a full description of the radiation properties, such as the radiation pattern, beam so… Show more

“…When γ equals to 17°, 47°, and 80°, the corresponding ∆ϕ is 29°, 43°, and 61°, respectively (Figure 7d). [112] A nearly linear relationship between ∆ϕ and γ is obtained. However, ∆ϕ is increased to ≈90° when γ is equal to 0°, which is larger than those of all bent Ag nanowires.…”

“…There have been many works reporting the directional SPP-based emissions from metallic nanowires. [107][108][109][110][111][112] A representative demonstration of directional emission is a single-crystalline Ag nanowire supported on a dielectric substrate. As shown in Figure 7a, the Ag nanowire is excited at the input end by a focused beam and the emitted light is collected in the Fourier plane of the microscope.…”

“…Propagating SPPs are effectively scattered into radiating photons at the kink, resulting in a drop of the transmitted power. 16,32,33 By calculating the electric fields at the end facet of the 700 nm long c-Al NW, the resultant bending losses were determined to be 33%, 89%, and 96% for kink angles of a ¼ 35 , 55 , and 90 , respectively.…”

“…Unlike resonant antennas, TWAs use waves traveling on a guiding structure as the main radiation mechanism . V‐shaped Ag (V‐Ag) NWs supporting many conduction or localized modes have been proven to be TWAs with unique performances, including tunable radiation properties, easy fabrication and integration, and ultrawide bandwidths . In this paper, hybrid V‐Ag NWs (HVNWs) with QDs absorbed onto the V‐Ag NWs through SiO 2 spacers are proposed to realize unidirectional fluorescence emission.…”
