Disaster risk reduction: Psychological perspectives on preparedness

Abstract: Facilitating people's ability to anticipate, prepare for and recover from disaster is an important component of the UNISDR strategy for disaster risk reduction. Following a discussion of the functional characteristics of preparedness, this paper first discusses how hazard characteristics and psychological constructs influence people's ability to anticipate uncertain future events. It then reviews how psychological theories (Health Belief Model, Protection Motivation Theory, PrE Theory, Theory of Planned Behavi… Show more

“…A safe structure alone is not enough to protect the patients within. This starts with a workforce that understands the collective responsibility for disaster risk reduction and preparedness (Paton et al 2019). The responsibility lies with healthcare organizations and nursing leadership to increase the knowledge and preparedness of their healthcare workforce to enable them to anticipate, respond to and cope with the effects of a disaster.…”

“…They present a model based on Community Engagement Theory (“CET”) that is integrating the constructs implicated in achieving transformative outcomes in hazard preparedness [ 5 ] (p. 14). The central generative axis of the model integrates the relationship between community leadership and four factors documented as critical for DRR preparation: community participation, collective efficacy, empowerment and trust [ 104 ]. This generative axis is provoked by a catalyst such as a disaster and supported by resilient community characteristics.…”

“…A fase de preparação envolve ações dos governos, organizações, comunidades e indivíduos para antecipar e prever os impactos de prováveis desastres, de modo a tentar reduzir seu risco e aumentar a capacidade de resposta (Paton, 2019). Essa primeira fase é o momento no qual são passadas, para a população em geral, as principais informações quanto à existência do problema de saúde pública, além das possíveis consequências relacionadas ao evento (Faro et al, 2020).…”
