This article examines the case of academic drift, as an example of a theory developed and applied within higher education research. It traces the origins and meaning of the term, reviews its application by higher education researchers, and discusses the issues it raises and the critiques it has attracted. It concludes that academic drift is at the heart of the longstanding liberal/vocational education debate, so is likely to continue to attract attention. The contemporary application of this theoretical framework also illustrates both the tendency for researchers to re-invent similar ideas in different times and places, and to ignore or overlook the work of some researchers whilst acknowledging that of others. IntroductionHigher education is an inter-disciplinary field for research (Brennan and Teichler 2008, Kehm andMusselin 2013). With only a limited number of academic and other researchers devoting themselves full-time and long-term to researching higher education -at least outside of North America -most of those researching this field come from and remain based in other disciplines, departments or institutions, and their contributions are usually part-time and/ or short-term.While this means that higher education researchers are highly dispersed, it also has a more positive aspect, as a diverse range of both methodologies and (more particularly for the present analysis) theoretical frameworks are applied to researching higher education. Resumen: En las últimas décadas, la teoría del capitalismo académico ha ganado creciente relevancia como un enfoque para comprender la evolución reciente de los sistemas de educación Archivos Analíticos de Políticas Educativas Vol. 27, No. 79 2 superior. El presente artículo analiza la recepción de la teoría del capitalismo académico en América Latina. Con este fin, se exponen los principios conceptuales de esta aproximación y sus críticas en la literatura especializada. A continuación, se observa en detalle la recepción latinoamericana de este enfoque, prestando especial atención a su utilización para el análisis de los sistemas de educación superior de la región. Basándose en este análisis, se argumenta que el uso latinoamericano de la teoría del capitalismo académico aparece débil tanto en términos cuantitativos como cualitativos, aprovechándose a menudo para criticar el estado de los sistemas de educación superior antes que para avanzar en su comprensión. El artículo cierra con un resumen y enuncia líneas posibles de investigación. Palabras clave: Capitalismo académico; educación superior; América Latina; investigación en educación Circulation and reception of the theory of "academic capitalism" in Latin America Abstract: In recent decades, the theory of academic capitalism has gained increasing relevance as an approach for understanding the recent evolution of higher education systems. We analyze the reception of academic capitalism theory in Latin America. To meet this objective, the conceptual underpinnings of academic capitalism are explored as well as their criticisms in the specialized literature. Next, the Latin-American reception of this conceptual approach is examined in detail, with special attention to the ways in which this approach is used to evaluate national higher education systems. Building upon this analysis, it is argued that the Latin-American reception process shows limitations both in quantitative and qualitative terms and is frequently used to criticize the state of higher education systems rather than to understand them. The article closes with a summary and selected future lines of research. Este artigo analisa a recepção da teoria do capitalismo acadêmico na América Latina. Para tanto, os princípios conceituais desta abordagem e suas críticas são expostos na literatura especializada. A seguir, a recepção latino-americana desta abordagem é observada em detalhe, dando especial atenção ao seu uso para a análise dos sistemas de ensino superior da região.
