Discriminant ability of the 3‐ounce water swallow test to detect aspiration in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

Abstract: Background Given the need for quick and accurate dysphagia screening tools to optimize referral workflows and resource utilization in fast‐paced multidisciplinary amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) clinics, we evaluated the discriminant ability of the 3 oz. water swallow test (WST) to detect aspiration in individuals with ALS. Methods A total of 212 paired 3 oz. WST (index test) and standardized videofluoroscopic swallow studies (reference test) were completed in individuals with a confirmed diagnosis of ALS.… Show more

“…In a study with 31 participants with motor neuron disease including ALS (Focht), Garand et al [15] found the screen detected aspiration with a sensitivity of 80% and a specificity of 33%. However, in their study with 212 participants with ALS, Donohue et al [44] found that the 3-oz water test detected aspiration with a sensitivity of only 55% and a specificity of 72%. Based on their respective findings (Focht), Garand et al recommend evaluation via VFSS if the individual does not pass the 3-oz water test, whereas Donohue et al recommend against using it to screen for aspiration.…”

“…Alanyazın incelendiğinde ise bu formaların güncel olarak kullanıldığı görülmüştür. [16][17][18][19][20][21][22] Bu durum öğrencilerin güncel bilgiler doğrultusunda eğitim gördüklerini destekler niteliktedir. Ancak öğrencilerin çoğunluğunun buna rağmen kendilerini yeterli hissetmemesi önemli bir veriyi oluşturmaktadır.…”
