Dissemination of a Clone of Unusual Phenotype of Pandrug-Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii at a University Hospital in Taiwan

Abstract: , 15 isolates of pandrug-resistant unidentified Acinetobacter species were recovered from seven patients treated on different wards or intensive care units. Both 16S-23S rRNA intergenic spacer PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism profiles and sequence analysis of these isolates identified them as Acinetobacter baumannii. This pandrug-resistant A. baumannii strain with an unusual phenotype could persist in humans for long periods and was widely disseminated throughout the hospital.

“…Since PRA was first reported from Taiwan in 1998, there has been a global trend of evolution of MDRA to PRA [21]. This increase in pan-resistance has been observed in our medical centre over the past few years as well, and has led to the almost exclusive use of polymyxin as treatment in our patients for Acinetobacter infections [1].…”

“…The infections caused by these bacteria are difficult to be treated with antibiotics and are associated with a higher rate of mortality because few or no adequate therapeutic option exists (Kuo et al, 2004;Deplano et al, 2005;Falagas et al, 2005;Shah, 2005). According to National Nosocomial Infections Surveillance (NNIS), the prevalence of resistance in both pathogens is a significantly increasing trend (Gaynes and Edwards, 2005).…”
