Dissimilar Infrared Brazing of CoCrFe(Mn)Ni Equiatomic High Entropy Alloys and 316 Stainless Steel

Abstract: Dissimilar infrared brazing of CoCrFeMnNi/CoCrFeNi equiatomic high entropy alloys and 316 stainless steel using MBF601 and BNi-2 foils was evaluated. The wetting angles of the two fillers at 50 °C above their liquidus temperatures on the three substrates were below 40 degrees. The CoCrFeMnNi/316 SS joint had the highest shear strength of 361 MPa with BNi-2 filler brazing at 1020 °C for 180 s, and fractured at the CrB compound in the joint. The CoCrFeMnNi/MBF601/316 SS joint contained a CoCrFeMnNi-based matrix,… Show more

“…Considering this, the next topics that are presented in this paper mainly concern the overall progress on fusion-based and solid-state welding processes on HEAs. Nevertheless, information about welding HEAs through brazing is also available, as presented by Lin et al [52], where dissimilar joints between CoCrFeMnNi/CoCrFeNi alloy and CoCrFeMnNi/316 stainless steel were investigated.…”

“…In spite of the unsuccessful attempt of joint this hybrid structure, such an approach with careful evaluation of the microstructural evolution of the BM/WZ interface as well as compositional matching between the materials to be welded and the filler metal could represent an important strategy for hybrid structure welding. The use of brazing welding has also been reported along with HEAs [40,41]. Lin et al [40] investigated the dissimilar infrared brazing of CoCrFeMnNi equiatomic high entropy alloy and 316 stainless steel.…”

“…The use of brazing welding has also been reported along with HEAs [40,41]. Lin et al [40] investigated the dissimilar infrared brazing of CoCrFeMnNi equiatomic high entropy alloy and 316 stainless steel. In that study, two nickel-based fillers (BNi-2 and MBF601) were investigated as candidates for producing the CoCrFeMnNi / 316 SS joint.…”

“…Welding, an irreplaceable metal forming method, plays a pivotal role in the practical applications of emerging HEAs and MEAs. Recently reported welding methods include fusion welding [16], friction welding [17,18], brazing [19,20], transient liquid phase bonding [15], and diffusion bonding [21][22][23]. Diffusion bonding, a solid-state welding technology, exhibits exceedingly good adaptability to advanced structural materials and hardly damages the performance of base metal.…”
