Dissolution of iron oxide nanoparticles inside polymer nanocapsules

Abstract: The structure of poly(organosiloxane) nanocapsules partially filled with iron oxide cores of different sizes was revealed by small angle X-ray scattering and X-ray diffraction. The nanocapsules are synthesized by the formation of a poly(organosiloxane) shell around iron oxide nanoparticles and the simultaneous partial dissolution of these cores. Due to the high scattering contrast of the iron oxide cores compared to the polymer shell, the particle size distribution of the cores inside the capsules can be measu… Show more

“…Due to the acidic effect, corrosion products with micro-to-macro sizes range change into a smaller size, while the corrosion products with nano-topico scales will be dissolved into the ionic form. [57] To access this evidence, a small-angle X-ray scattering and X-ray diffraction [58] or an inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) of body fluid can be analyzed based on the local distance or systemically through circulating blood for ion distribution. [57] However, the macroparticles only can be assessed by histological studies.…”

“…The encapsulation of metal‐containing species, e.g. metal oxides and metal complexes, within nanocapsules has also been reported. Homogeneous encapsulation (or homogeneous dispersion) of metal complexes within the matrix of the PNPs is far less common than encapsulation within hollow particles, but has been achieved by the application of miniemulsion polymerization.…”

“…This result coincides with the in vivo fluorescence imaging data, in which the SI of the tumor of MHI-DSPE-SPION injected mice group is maximum at 1 day post injection. Iron oxide nanoparticles have tendency of leaching or iron dissolution at lower pH as in tumor environment 31 . We assume that SI drop of MRI at day 2 is probably due to iron dissolution which is not the case for NIR fluorescent agent like MHI-148.…”
