“…Current understanding of PMd function theorizes a fundamental role in the transformation of visual information into motor behaviour (Weinrich & Wise, 1982;Caminiti et al, 1991;Johnson et al, 1996;Wise et al, 1996). Consistent with this role, the discharge of PMd neurons is known to be strongly correlated with a spectrum of kinematic aspects of reaching movements, including movement direction, distance, target position and arm posture (Caminiti et al, 1991;Fu et al, 1993;Johnson et al, 1996;Scott et al, 1997) and is also modulated by visuospatial aspects of the task (di Pellegrino & Wise, 1993b;Johnson et al, 1996;Shen & Alexander, 1997;Zhang et al, 1997), including the visuomotor errors and adaptation induced by a change in the gain of the movement/visual cursor relationship (Flament et al, 1993;Wise et al, 1998). Since a system concerned with accuracy would be expected to be in¯uenced by visuospatial aspects of movements, it follows that the ®ring of PMd neurons may be modulated by the accuracy requirements of reaching movements.…”
