Distinct neocortical mechanisms underlie human SI responses to median nerve and laser evoked peripheral activation

Abstract: Magneto- and/or electro-encephalography (M/EEG) are non-invasive clinically-relevant tools that have long been used to measure electromagnetic fields in somatosensory cortex evoked by non-painful and painful somatosensory stimuli. Two commonly applied stimulation paradigms that produce distinct responses in primary somatosensory cortex (SI) linked to non-painful and painful sensations are electrical median nerve (MN) stimulation and cutaneous laser-evoked (LE) stimulation to the dorsum of the hand, respectivel… Show more

“…Following algorithmic fitting, we manually tested whether synaptic changes made during optimization were necessary to improve model fit and eliminated changes that did not improve the fit of the average dipole to waveform characteristics. The pre-tuned HNN model and the described process for hypothesis testing and parameter estimation has been successfully applied in several prior studies of sensory evoked responses (Jones et al, 2007, 2009; Kohl et al, 2022; Law et al, 2022; Sliva et al, 2018; Thorpe et al, 2021). This study is the first to apply this process to study evoked responses from frontal cortex.…”

“…We anticipate that this effort will dovetail with a need for further NICE and other computational modeling. TUS effects could also be modeled across the cortical depth, in interaction with other brain areas (Thorpe et al, 2024) or with the cellular properties of subcortical regions. We also welcome input via the online form on improving the criteria for assessing neurobiological or behavioral effects, which will benefit the entire TUS community and is a key objective of the ITRUSST consortium https://itrusst.com/.…”

“…The scripted interface of HNN-core has enabled the development of advanced parameter inference techniques ( Tolley et al, 2023 ) using Simulation-Based Inference ( Tejero-Cantero et al, 2020 ). It has been used in Thorpe et al (2021) to propose new mechanisms of innocuous versus noxious sensory processing in the primary somatosensory neocortex. Lankinen et al (2023) have used HNN-core to study crossmodal interactions between auditory and visual cortices.…”
