The honeybee, Apis mellifera, stands out for its positive image due to its contribution to crop pollination and honey production, which facilitated its widespread distribution. However, large apiaries resulting in high honeybee densities could increase pollination frequency while increasing competition for floral resources, ultimately affecting native plant fitness. We studied the impact of managed honeybee hives on pollination and reproductive success of native plants in Villavicencio Nature Reserve, Mendoza, Argentina. During the flowering peak, we studied pollination and reproduction of three native plant species (Larrea divaricata, L. cuneifolia and Zuccagnia punctata) near and far from the hives. We estimated pollen deposition on flower stigmas, pollen tubes developed in flower pistils, fruit set, seed set and seed viability. We found that the honeybee hives had a positive effect on the reproduction of the self‐compatible species, L. divaricata. For the self‐incompatible species, results differed among species: Hives had positive effects on the pollination and negative effects on the reproduction of L. cuneifolia, while they had negative effects on the reproduction of Z. punctata. Synthesis and applications. Beekeeping is increasingly turning to natural areas in search of better quality honey; however, increased honeybee abundance in the field could influence the reproduction of native plants. Our results show that the introduction of managed hives negatively affected the reproduction of self‐incompatible native plants. This result allows us to make several recommendations for conservation and management actions concerning beekeeping in natural areas, regarding the among‐year rotation of the location of hives, the number of hives per site, and the need to monitor the reproduction of self‐incompatible species.

Most alpine ecosystems are subject to non-native species invasion as climate warms and human disturbance increases. Therefore, it is important to identify the main barriers and facilitators of alpine plant invasions. While there is much research in continental alpine areas, there is limited research in maritime environments, which have distinctive biological, edaphic and geomorphologic features due to the scarcity of snow in winter. Here, we examine the contribution of anthropogenic and biotic factors on non-native plant invasions in the alpine areas of lutruwita (Tasmania), Australia. Specifically, we test whether disturbances associated with roads and livestock grazing facilitate non-native plant invasion and if biotic resistance from native plants and wild grazing animals inhibits such invasion. We used floristic data from: a statewide database; data from long-term grazing exclosures, and data from paired quadrats on roadsides and natural vegetation. Our results showed that non-native plants were associated with roadside disturbance and livestock grazing, with the latter having a legacy effect of 50 years. The persistent effect of stock grazing was evident in the exclusion experiment monitored over 30 years, where non-native plants occurred sporadically in time and space. In contrast, we found that the presence of wild grazing mammals, complete vegetation cover and high native richness, restricted non-native plants, emphasizing the importance of biotic resistance in controlling non-native plant invasions. These results indicate that livestock removal and road closure could be effective in reversing non-native plant invasion in this and other areas with wild vertebrate herbivores and high plant cover.

Introducción y objetivos: El cambio climático, el ganado y el creciente uso turístico favorecen la dispersión de plantas exóticas, amenazando la conservación de los ecosistemas altoandinos. Estudiamos los patrones de distribución de plantas nativas y exóticas en senderos recreativos de montaña. M&M: Implementamos el protocolo MIREN en seis senderos (2400-3600 m s.n.m.) en dos áreas protegidas de los Andes centrales de Mendoza en las Cordilleras Frontal y Principal. Resultados: Encontramos 180 especies nativas y 41 exóticas. La riqueza de especies nativas fue máxima a elevaciones intermedias, mientras que la riqueza de exóticas disminuyó con la elevación. La riqueza regional de nativas fue mayor en la Cordillera Frontal que en la Principal (114 versus 71 nativas, respectivamente) mientras que la riqueza regional de exóticas fue menor en la Frontal que en la Principal (20 versus 28 exóticas, respectivamente). La riqueza de exóticas por parcela fue mayor en la Cordillera Frontal que en la Principal. El rango de distribución altitudinal de exóticas fue mayor en la Cordillera Frontal. Dos exóticas abundantes, Taraxacum officinale y Cerastium arvense, estuvieron a lo largo de todo el gradiente en la Cordillera Frontal, alcanzando los 3600 m s.n.m. Encontramos siete exóticas no citadas anteriormente. Conclusiones: Los nuevos registros amplían los rangos de distribución conocidos para algunas especies exóticas. A pesar de que el número de especies exóticas fue similar cerca y lejos de los senderos, cinco especies sólo estuvieron en los bordes de los mismos, lo que sugiere que los senderos favorecen los procesos de invasión.
