Adaptive bitrate streaming (ABR) has become the de facto technique for video streaming over the Internet. Despite a flurry of techniques, achieving high quality ABR streaming over cellular networks remains a tremendous challenge. First, the design of an ABR scheme needs to balance conflicting Quality of Experience (QoE) metrics such as video quality, quality changes, stalls and startup performance, which is even harder under highly dynamic bandwidth in cellular network. Second, streaming providers have been moving towards using Variable Bitrate (VBR) encodings for the video content, which introduces new challenges for ABR streaming, whose nature and implications are little understood. Third, mobile video streaming consumes a lot of data. Although many video and network providers currently offer data saving options, the existing practices are suboptimal in QoE and resource usage. Last, when the audio and video tracks are stored separately, video and audio rate adaptation needs to be dynamically coordinated to achieve good overall streaming experience, which presents interesting challenges while, somewhat surprisingly, has received little attention by the research community. In this dissertation, we tackle each of the above four challenges.Firstly, we design a framework called PIA (PID-control based ABR streaming) that strategically leverages PID control concepts and novel approaches to account for the various requirements of ABR streaming. Electric power systems provide the backbone of modern industrial societies. Enabling scalable grid analytics is the keystone to successfully operating large transmission and distribution systems. However, today' s power systems are suffering from everincreasing computational burdens in sustaining the expanding communities and deep integration of renewable energy resources, as well as managing huge volumes of data accordingly. These unprecedented challenges call for transformative analytics to support the resilient operations of power systems. Recently, the explosive growth of quantum computing techniques has ignited new hopes of revolutionizing power system computations. Quantum computing harnesses quantum mechanisms to solve traditionally intractable computational problems, which may lead to ultra-scalable and efficient power grid analytics. This paper reviews the newly emerging application of quantum computing techniques in power systems. We present a comprehensive overview of existing quantum-engineered power analytics from different operation perspectives, including static analysis, transient analysis, stochastic analysis, optimization, stability, and control. We thoroughly discuss the related quantum algorithms, their benefits and limitations, hardware implementations, and recommended practices. We also review the quantum networking techniques to ensure secure communication of power systems in the quantum era. Finally, we discuss challenges and future research directions. This paper will hopefully stimulate increasing attention to the development of quantum-engineered smart grids.

Smart programmable microgrids (SPM) is an emerging technology for making microgrids more software-defined and less hardware-independent such that converting distributed energy resources (DERs) to networked community microgrids becomes affordable, autonomic, and secure. As one of the cornerstones of SPM, this paper pioneers a concept of software-defined operation optimization for networked microgrids, where operation objectives, grid connection, and DER participation will be defined by software and plug-and-play, and can be quickly reconfigured, based on the development of modularized and tightened models and a novel asynchronous price-based decomposition-and-coordination method. Key contributions include: (1) design the architecture of the operational optimization of networked microgrids which can be readily implemented to ensure the programmability of islanded microgrids in solving the distributed optimization models, (2) realize a novel discrete model of droop controller, and (3) introduce a powerful distributed and asynchronous method Distributed and Asynchronous Surrogate Lagrangian Relaxation (DA-SLR) to efficiently coordinate microgrids asynchronously. Two case studies are tested to demonstrate the efficiency of developed DA-SLR, and specifically, the testing results show the superiority of DA-SLR as compared to previous methods such as ADMM.
