Distribution and conservation of three important bird groups of the Atlantic Forest in north-east Brazil

Abstract: The Pernambuco Endemism Center in north-east Brazil has the most fragmented forest cover and the largest number of threatened birds of the whole Atlantic Forest. We analyzed the distribution of three groups of bird species: forest-dependent, endemic and/or threatened using the interpolation method of Inverse Distance Weighting. We also checked the concentration of these birds in protected and unprotected areas, suggesting new sites that need to be protected. The richness concentration of forest-dependent, ende… Show more

“…Our results therefore reinforce the importance of Mata do Cedro for the maintenance of local biodiversity and highlight their probable role as stepping stones for birds moving through this highly fragmented region. Previous studies in Mata do Cedro identified 45 forest dependent species, 11 PCE endemics and 12 threatened taxa (Pereira et al 2016), strongly corroborating the results of the present work.…”

“…The Mata do Cedro Forest fragment (09°31'S, 35°54'W) is situated within the Pernambuco Center of Endemism (PCE), in the municipality of Rio Largo, Alagoas State, northeast Brazil. It is characterized as open ombrophilous forest and covers approximately 1000 ha (Pereira et al, 2014(Pereira et al, , 2016 surrounded by sugar cane monocultures. Inside the forest there are several clearings undergoing regeneration and a network of wide trails.…”

“…Those point values (species richness and number of individuals) were interpolated through the inverse distance weighted method (IDW) implemented in ArcGIS desktop 10.3 [61], and plotted over the urban surface of Santiago. IDW is an interpolation method which assumes that closer points are more similar to each other than distant ones; it also considers the overall spatial composition between measured points in order to interpolate values [62][63][64] . This method has been considered advantageous as compared to other interpolation alternatives, for applications to bird richness and abundance data, because it restricts the interpolated values within the boundaries of observed minimum and maximum values [65].…”
