Background: Low birthweight (LBW) is one of the main risk factors of neonatal mortality and morbidity. As such, it is an important public health issue particularly in developing countries. Worldwide, LBW shares around 15-20% of birth outcome. In Indonesia, LBW shares about 10.2% of birth outcome. In theory, the risk factors of LBW include not only biological aspect but also psychosocial and economic aspects. This study sought to estimate the biopsychosocial and economic determinants of LBW in Jambi, South Sumatera, using path analysis approach. Subjects and Method:This was an analytic observational study with case control design. The study was carried out at 20 community health centers in Jambi, South Sumatera, from December 2017 to January 2018. A total sample of 200 newborn infants consisting of 50 LBW and 150 normal birthweight newborn infants were selected for this study by fixed disease sampling. The dependent variable was birthweight. The independent variables were maternal age, maternal mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC), gestational age, infant sex, maternal gestational stress, maternal education, family income at gestational period, and sanitation. Data on birthweight and MUAC were taken from obstetric record. The other data were collected by questionnaire. The data were analyzed by path analysis. Results: The risk of LBW was increased by female sex (b= 0.99; 95% CI= -0.12 to 2.12; p= 0.081), and high maternal stress (b= 2.35; 95% CI= 0.70 to 4.01; p= 0.005). The risk of LBW decreased with gestational age ≥37 weeks (b= -5.06; 95% CI= -6.49 to -3.62; p= 0.000), and good sanitation (b= -1.04; 95% CI= -2.13 to 0.05; p= 0.062). Objective: This study aimed to estimate the change in prevalence of low birth weight (LBW) over the last decade in India and to identify its associated factors-biological, demographic, socio-economic, and programmatic. Methods:We used the data from the National Family Health Survey of 2005-2006 (NFHS-3) and 2015 -2016. The sample of this study included 11 300 children from NFHS-3 and 99 894 from NFHS-4 data; all these children were the last full-term singleton live-births, born within the last 3 years prior to the survey.Results: In India, the prevalence of LBW has significantly declined from 20.4% (95%CI 19.4-21.4) to 16.4% (95% CI 16.1-16.8) in the last decade. The prevalence of LBW remained high in girl children (OR = 1.2, 95% CI 1.2-1.3; P < .001), whose mothers were adolescent (OR = 1.2, 95% CI 1.1-1.3; P < .001), and were stunted (OR = 1.3, 95% CI 1.3-1.3; P < .001). Prevalence of LBW declined among second or higher birth order child (OR = 0.8, 95% CI 0.8-0.9; P < .001), whose mothers educated up to secondary level and above (OR = 0.6 to 0.8), belonged to rich wealth quintiles (OR = 0.9 to 0.8), were from rural area (OR = 0.9, 95% CI 0.9-1.0; P < .001), received better nutrition and adequate antenatal care (OR = 0.8, 95% CI 0.8-0.8; P < .001), and were from eastern, northeastern, and southern regions of India (OR = 0.9 to 0.5). Conclusion:Although the prevalence of LBW in India has declined over the past decade, the extent of the decline is modest. In the coming years, health programs in India need to gear up with greater convergence between maternal health services and maternal nutrition to reduce LBW.

In utero shocks have been shown to have long‐lasting consequences. However, we hardly know whether these effects tend to fade out over time and whether they can be compensated by post‐natal investments. This paper examines the effect of birth endowment over time by employing a long panel of individuals born in 1983 in Cebu (Philippines) that includes relevant information on the pregnancy. We build a refined health endowment measure netted out from prenatal investments. We find that initial endowments affect trajectories both through the human capital production function and subsequent parental investment. The effect of birth endowment remains until adulthood and the fading out is very limited for health outcomes but more pronounced for educational outcomes. We also find that parents tend to reinforce initial health endowments, but the effect of this behaviour has almost no effect on final outcomes.
