Curly chili is a horticultural product with high nutritional value, greatly demanded as a distinctive complement or flavoring for dishes due to its unique taste and aroma. Despite the increasing demand for chilies, production has not followed suit, mainly due to disruption caused by viruses transmitted by Bemisia tabaci and Thrips sp. This study aimed to investigate the effect of tobacco extract on the growth and development of viral diseases in curly chili. Conducted at Kwangsang Village, Jumapolo District, Karanganyar Regency, from September to December 2021, the research was designed using a completely randomized block design, with treatment doses of tobacco extract at 0 mL/L, 1 mL/L, 2 mL/L, 3 mL/L, and 4 mL/L, labeled J0, J1, J2, J3, and J4, respectively. The results indicated that the variabels, i.e. plant height, number of leaves, number of fruits, and fruit weight per plant, were significantly affected by the tobacco extract. Similarly, the disease incidence and severity of viral infection were significantly influenced by the tobacco extract application. The yield decrease in curly chili was attributed to virus infection by Bemisia tabaci and Thrips sp., which caused chlorosis and mosaic symptoms on the leaves. Although the affected plants did not die, they experienced a yield reduction. The application of tobacco extract significantly reduced the percentage of incidence and severityof virus infection on curly chili. The highest disease incidence was 35.42% (J0) and disease severity was 70.92% (J0), while the lowest disease incidence was 14.58% (J4) and disease severity was 20.58% (J4).

Infrared Thermography for Early Detection of Pepper yellow leaf curl virus on Chili Plants Observations of plant pests and diseases are generally carried out by looking for visual symptoms for each disease target. Agricultural technology 4.0 began to be used for the development of plant disease detection methods. It was reported that there were differences in color and temperature between diseased and healthy plants which could be recorded by a thermal camera. This study aimed to determine the potential of the FLIR One Pro-IOS thermal camera to record differences in color and temperature between viral-infected and healthy chili plants. Chili plants in the greenhouse that were inoculated with Pepper yellow leaf curl virus (PYLCV) experienced an increase in temperature 3 days after inoculation (28.62 ℃) compared to plants that were not inoculated with PYLCV (27.32 ℃). Digital image recording of chili leaf samples from the field showed that plants infected by multiple viruses (Chilli veinal mottle virus, Pepper mottle virus and PYLCV) has higher temperature than those infected with a single virus. The lowest and highest mean temperatures were recorded in plant samples infected with PepMV (17.74 ℃) and mixed infected by PYLCV and ChiVMV (25.68 ℃). Digital images of virus-infected plants tend to show a predominance of bright yellow, while virus-free plants showed a predominance of dark purple. Further analysis confirmed higher digital numbers for diseased plant images than healthy plants. The thermography method has the potential to be an early detection method because it can detect viral infection before visual symptoms appear.

Cabai merah merupakan salah satu komoditas sayuran yang banyak digemari oleh masyarakat Indonesia baik sebagai bumbu dapur maupun pelengkap makanan. Tingkat produksi cabai merah masih berfluktuasi. Salah satu penyebabnya yakni adanya serangan Pepper yellow leaf curl virus (PepYLCV). Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengidentifikasi secara molekuler penyakit PepYLCV dan melaporkan keberadaan penyakit tersebut pada pertanaman cabai di Kabupaten Gowa, Sulawesi Selatan. Pengambilan sampel tanaman cabai dilakukan di tiga kecamatan berbeda di Kabupaten Gowa dimana cabai banyak ditanam. Sampel yang diambil selanjutnya diekstraksi yang dilanjutkan dengan proses PCR, sekuen nukleotida, dan analisis filogenetika. Gejala infeksi virus pada tanaman cabai yang ditemukan pada tiga kecamatan di Kabupaten Gowa adalah mosaik kuning dan hijau, daun menggulung, melengkung ke atas dan/atau ke bawah, dan tanaman kerdil. Keparahan penyakit dan kejadian penyakit PepYLCV di Kabupaten Gowa masing-masing 78% dan 44%. Gejala infeksi virus pada tanaman cabai positif terinfeksi Begomovirus dan hasil analisis sekuensing menunjukkan bahwa virus tersebut adalah PepYLCV. PepYLCV di Kabupaten Gowa memiliki kekerabatan yang dekat dengan PepYLCV Bali. Hasil penelitian ini merupakan laporan pertama keberadaan PepYLCV di Sulawesi Selatan.
