Agricultural production in the Pampas region is one of the most important economic activities in Argentina. However, the possible environmental effects related to the growth of this activity in the last years have not been studied enough. Particularly, the effects of pesticides mixtures are a topic of great concern both for society and regulatory authorities worldwide, given the possible additive and synergistic relationships between these chemicals and their possible effects on aquatic biota. Based on a concentration addition model, this study developed an Ecological Risk Assessment (ERA) of pesticides from freshwater ecosystems in the Pampas region. For this purpose, reported pesticides concentrations available in public bibliography and a Risk Quotients (RQs) approach were used. A cumulative risk map was established to display RQs for current use pesticides (CUPs) and legacy chemicals. The ΣRQs were calculated for 66 sites, using available reported measured environmental concentrations (MECs) and predicted no effect concentrations (PNECs) of pesticides. While ΣRQ for only CUPs resulted in a high and very high risk (ΣRQ N 1) for 29% of the sites, when legacy pesticides were incorporated this percentage reached the 41% of the sites, increasing significantly the absolute values of RQ. Herbicides like glyphosate and atrazine contributed considerably to the ΣRQ CUPs while organochlorines were the major contributors for ΣRQs when legacy pesticides were incorporated. Moreover, some active ingredients (acetochlor, carbendazim and fenitrothion) which are approved for their use in Argentina but banned in EU showed high contribution to ΣRQ CUPs . Pesticides used to protect agricultural crops may contaminate groundwater. This work aimed to identify the pesticides used in Lombardy, Italy, in 2016, their concentration in the groundwater and the risk for health associated with the intake of drinkable water in the adult population. The risk was evaluated for the presence of single and multiple active substances in the groundwater, calculating the hazard quotient (HQ) and the hazard index (HI), respectively. Lombardy utilises an agricultural area of 980,112 h, which is mainly cultivated with cereals (74%). Approximately 2354 pesticides (about 1.3 × 107 kg), containing 410 active substances (about 4.5 × 106 kg) were sold. There were groundwater contamination measurements in 158 monitoring points, which were investigated twice a year for 31 active substances, and a total of 9152 determinations. Only 17 currently used active substance were measured in the groundwater, among which three belonged to the 10 best-sold pesticides. The exceedance of the environmental quality standard was observed for about 1.5% determinations. The intake of contaminated water in the adult population resulted in a HQ typically ranging between 10−3 and 10−4 and a HI of about 10−3. Although the number of pesticides sold in 2016 in Lombardy was big, only a small fraction of active substances was monitored in the groundwater. Considering these monitored substances, the intake of contaminated groundwater in the adult general population posed an irrelevant risk for health.

Chlorpyrifos is a commonly used pesticide that belong to the organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) group. Chlorpyrifos is widely used in residential environments and agriculture for pest control. As many OPPs, Chlorpyrifos degrades faster to more complex and toxic compounds under natural conditions, thus diverse effects of these compounds over aquatic species are unknown. Due to the risk that pesticides as Chlorpyrifos, which mainly breaks down to 3,5,6- trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCP) on the ecosystems, there is an increasing need to intensify the environmental monitoring and ecotoxicological risk assessment for both substances. Risk assessment provides a systematic approach for characterizing the nature and magnitude of the risks associated with environmental health hazards. However, in countries like Colombia, where the use of Chlorpyrifos is widespread, the number of investigations on the dynamics and risk involved in the presence of this class of substances in water bodies is limited.
