Distribution of erb‐b2, erb‐b3, and erb‐b4 in the developing avian nervous system

Abstract: The neuregulin proteins (GGF/ARIA/NDF/Heregulin) are pleiotrophic growth and differentiation factors whose receptors, erb-B2, erb-B3, and erb-B4, are members of the epidermal growth factor receptor family of receptor tyrosine kinases. With western blots, we have examined the developmental and regional distribution of these receptors within the brain and sciatic nerve of chick embryos. The receptors erb-B2, erb-B3, and erb-B4 are developmentally and spatially regulated within the nervous system. In addition, cu… Show more

“…Alternatively, one can hypothesize that in addition to signaling between individual SC, SC can also communicate with other cells which also express erb-B receptors such as neurons (Mason et al, 1993;Francoeur et al, 1995). This would add another dimension to the signaling which occurs between neurons and glial cells.…”

“…ErbB4 is predominantly expressed in brain, heart, and skeletal muscle (37). ErbB4 was also shown to be broadly distributed in the brains of chicken embryos (E14 and E17, predominantly in neurons) (38), in rat retina cultures (39), at neuromuscular synapses (44), but not in cultured human and rat Schwann cells (40,41). Recently, ErbB4 was found to colocalize with GABA ϩ cells (42).…”

“…In addition, erbB-2 and erbB-4 have been reported in neurons of the developing chick nervous system; however, erbB-3 was found only in glial cells [29]. In contrast, we now report that erbB-2, erbB-3, and erbB-4 are all expressed in developing DRG neurons.…”
