“…Lewis & Sharpe 1987, Simard et al 2002. These locations also have special significance as foraging habitats for breeding (Wilson & Manuwal 1986, Wahl & Speich 1994 and this study) and migratory (Braune & Gaskin 1982 and this study) marine birds. Therefore, tidal-coupling across plankton → planktivorous-fishes → fish-predator linkages is likely to be an important general mechanism structuring nearshore marine predator-prey interactions and food web dynamics.…”

“…Rhinoceros Auklets breeding on the U.S. west coast have recently increased significantly in number, despite the recent period of ocean warming with more frequent severe El Niños and fewer La Niñas (Ainley et al 1994, Boersma 1998. Auklets from Protection Island travel considerable distances within Washington's inner coastal waters in search for food (Wahl and Speich 1994). Since Rhinoceros Auklets are nocturnal with respect to colony visitation (Wilson and Manuwal 1986), they have considerable time during the extended daylight hours of summer in search of distant and patchy food supplies.…”

“…To some extent, starting from [33] and modifying the approach adopted there, the authors [35] evaluated the potential effect of oil pollution on seabirds in each habitat in Puget Sound, Washington State [49,50]. They developed and described a relatively simpler method of calculating the bird oil index (BOI), which quantitatively took into account various aspects of the behavior, biology, distribution, and abundance of seabirds, as follows:…”
