Dra matic tec tonic and sea level changes of the Cen tral Paratethys realm dur ing the Middle Mio cene re sulted in changes of the coastal and sea bed mor phol ogy af fect ing the com po si tion of the ma rine as so ci a tion and the dis tri bu tion of the fa cies along the coast. Three dif fer ent ep i sodes (ma rine-ter res trial-ma rine) in the en vi ron men tal evo lu tion are in ter preted. A lower ma rine unit (Badenian; Lower Serravallian) re flects organodetrital sed i men ta tion on and around an al gal bioherm. Low terrigenous in put maërl fa cies of typ i cal rhodalgal car bon ate fac tory type char ac ter ise the top of the al gal mound. On the slopes, a rim of rhodechfor fa cies sep a rated the bioherm from the rest of the bot tom which had a sea grass cover. This high-en ergy rhodechfor car bon ate fac tory is de scribed from the Cen tral Paratethys realm for the first time. It is com posed mostly of coralline al gae (Mesophyllum, Lithothamnion, Spongites and Lithophyllum), ben thic foraminifers (Elphidium crispum, Neoconorbina terquemi, Miniacina sp., Borelis melo), echinoids (cidaroid, spatangoid and diadematoid groups) and bryo zoans. Up lift of the Malé Karpaty Mts. re sulted in tec tonic ac tiv ity in the vi cin ity, doc u mented by the pres ence of clastic dikes and nor mal faults in the pro file stud ied. Sub se quent flu vial and ter res trial sed i men ta tion is rep re sented by regolith, palaeosoil and chan nel body de pos its set dis cor dantly on the top of la goonal de pos its. Fi nally, the third ep i sode is rep re sented by the Sarmatian transgressive ma rine se quence, which is characterized by coarse peb bly de posit eroded from an up lifted pre-Neo gene base ment. The strata stud ied orig i nated in a warm tem per ate cli mate around the Badenian-Sarmatian tran si tion.

Sea sonal vari a tions, en vi ron men tal pa ram e ters and stand ing crop as sess ment of ben thic foraminifera in east ern Bah rain, Ara bian Gulf Liv ing ben thic foraminifera in a rel a tively un pol luted site off shore Bah rain in the Ara bian Gulf, were stud ied to de ter mine the sea sonal vari abil ity of their pop u la tions, as well as en vi ron men tal pa ram e ters that may af fect their dis tri bu tion. The max i mum foraminiferal den sity was ob served dur ing win ter with the as sem blages pri mar ily dom i nated by rotaliids and sec ond arily by miliolids. The high pop u la tion is at trib uted to an in creased num ber of ju ve niles. A re la tion ship be tween sed i ment grain-size and the foraminiferal den sity re veals that ju ve niles were most abun dant on coarse-grained sandy sub strate and less abundant on fine-grained sub strates. In spring, the foraminiferal den sity de creased, and the low est val ues were ob served dur ing sum mer. The pop u la tion in creased again in au tumn with high est ju ve nile/adult ra tios. More over, re sults of rel a tive abundance and spe cies con sis tency show that Am mo nia and Glabratellina are con sis tent from the shal low est to the deep est station, whereas miliolids oc curred only at deeper sta tions. The num bers of Peneroplidae and Elphidium also in creased along the depth transect. En vi ron men tal char ac ter iza tion re veals that al though the site is sub ject to eutrophication caused by nitrates and sul fates, pol lu tion caused by hy dro car bons and heavy met als is not sig nif i cant. The as sess ment of 63 heavy metals showed that none of the met als had con cen tra tions that ex ceed in ter na tion ally ac cepted norms (the de vised level of Ef fect Range -Low), but with high con cen tra tion of stron tium. The lack of a sig nif i cant en vi ron men tal ef fect of heavy met als is con firmed by the Foraminiferal Ab nor mal ity In dex of <2%. Like wise, no hy dro car bon con tam i na tion was de tected in the wa ter or sed i ment sam ples. We con clude that the site in Bah rain is not yet ad versely af fected by hu man de vel op ment, and there fore can pro vide base line in for ma tion for fu ture com par i son and as sess ment of foraminiferal as sem blages in con tam inated zones of the Ara bian Gulf.

“…The genus has been reported as of lower abundance (<12%) from the Abu Dhabi coastline, and throughout those observed in the Pleistocene samples, even in samples with few other taxa. Nevertheless, the genus has not been recorded and catalogued by Cherif et al [29] and Saidova [30], even under a different name such as Glabratella or Pararotalia. Over and above, no modern examples of an assemblage dominated by Murrayinella has been ever reported from the Arabian Gulf, although the taxon is common throughout the sub-tropical to tropical Indo-Pacific (i.e., northern Australian margin: Chivas et al [31]; Parker [32]; Japan: Nomura and Takayanagi [33]; Thailand: Melis and Violanti [27]).…”

Benthic Foraminifera in Eastern Bahrain: Relationships With Local Pollution Sources

This preliminary study tracks the response of living benthic foraminifera at a polluted site in eastern Bahrain, with the aim to determine the effects of recent anthropogenic pollution on their distribution patterns and morphological deformities. The boat harbor in Askar, Bahrain is subjected to pollution by nutrients, organic matter, and hydrocarbons. Foraminiferal density is found to be higher at the polluted site compared with a nearby unpolluted site, suggesting a possible higher amount of available nutrients for the benthic foraminifera. Seven taxonomical groups were recognized in the polluted transect, including Ammonia, Glabratellina, Murrayinella, Elphidium, Brizalina, miliolids, and peneroplids. By comparing the foraminiferal assemblages with a nearby unpolluted transect, the genus Murrayinella appeared to be a dominant and pervasive taxon, as it was able to proliferate in the organically polluted environment. The results are contradictory to previously published findings on modern foraminiferal assemblages in the Arabian Gulf, as Murrayinella is rarely reported. However, the population of miliolids was drastically reduced at the polluted site due to high organic matter pollution, which might support the sensitive nature of this taxonomic group.
