Palaeoecology and sedimentology of the Miocene marine and terrestrial deposits in the “Medieval Quarry” on Devínska Kobyla Hill (Vienna Basin)

Abstract: Dra matic tec tonic and sea level changes of the Cen tral Paratethys realm dur ing the Middle Mio cene re sulted in changes of the coastal and sea bed mor phol ogy af fect ing the com po si tion of the ma rine as so ci a tion and the dis tri bu tion of the fa cies along the coast. Three dif fer ent ep i sodes (ma rine-ter res trial-ma rine) in the en vi ron men tal evo lu tion are in ter preted. A lower ma rine unit (Badenian; Lower Serravallian) re flects organodetrital sed i men ta tion on and around an al g… Show more

“…(Figures 8, 9). Similar associations of the same age dencka, 1994;Studencka and Jasionowski, 2011;Holcová et al, 2015a) and Vienna Basin (Wiedl et al, 2013;Pivko et al, 2017). The sporadic occurrence of planktic foraminifera, which cannot survive in the shallow coastal environment of the Hámor section, could be transported from the central to marginal part of the basin by surface currents that agrees with the anti-estuarine circulation model suggested for Central Paratethys during NN5 Zone (Báldi, 2006;Kováč et al, 2017).…”

“…In some samples, Ammonia parkinsoniana and R. spinulosa reach almost 10-25%. A very low portion of agglutinated foraminifers in all studied samples (both in the residuum and thin sections) were obtained in all analyzed samples (Pivko et al 2017;Ruman et al 2017). The average simple species diversity of the studied assemblages is low (SSD 8-9) due to the prevalence of the low diversi ed samples (SSD 4-18).…”

“…These occurrences are delimited to the west by the approximately NE-SW striking Láb fault line, which extends from Lozorno town in the south to Rohožník town in the north (Schaleková 1969(Schaleková , 1973(Schaleková , 1978Benejová 1985;Hladilová 1991;Hrabovský and Fordinál 2013). The Sandberg Formation also appears along the northern margin of Devín town within the SW Vienna Basin (Pivko et al 2017).…”
