Distribution of Heavy Metals in Core Marine Sediments of Coastal East Malaysia by Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis and Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectroscopy

Abstract: Fifty-five core marine sediments from three locations at South China Sea and one location each at Sulu Sea and Sulawesi Sea of coastal East Malaysia were analyzed for heavy metals by instrumental neutron activation analysis and inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy. The enrichment factor and the modified degree of contamination were used to calculate the anthropogenic and pollution status of the elements in the samples. The enrichment factor of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn varied from 0.42-4.26, 0.50-… Show more

“…Surface sediments from the Malaysian coast had higher Cu, Zn, As, and Cr concentrations than those from Mong Cai, while the Pb concentration was lower (Ashraf et al, 2018). In C1 and C2 from the Mong Cai coast, Pb, Zn, As, and Cr were higher, while Cd and Cu at Mong Cai were lower (Ashraf et al, 2018).…”

“…Three locations on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia were chosen as our study areas (Table 1). These areas are considered as the sites receiving anthropogenic inputs from urban areas and port activities, and agricultural areas 8 . and the sample heated to incipient dryness.…”

“…The beach was also reported to be polluted from intense beach activities, while the clear sea became a turbid mess of brown water 40 . Similar as Zn, Cu is vital for metabolic processes 26 but high amount of long-term exposure could lead to diarrhoea, dizziness, headache and vomiting and this is likely to happen if humans were to consume contaminated seafood harvested from polluted breeding grounds 8 .…”
