Distribution of Inclusion Bodies in Tissues from 100 Dogs Infected with Canine Distemper Virus

Abstract: ABSTRACT. One hundred dogs that were positive for canine distemper virus antigen and inclusion bodies in the tonsils were examined for the distribution of inclusion bodies in various tissues. Inclusion bodies were found in the lungs (70 dogs), brains (20 dogs), urinary bladders (73 dogs), stomachs (78 dogs), spleens (77 dogs), and lymph nodes (81 dogs) of the dogs. Based on these results, the tonsils may be the most suitable tissue for detection of inclusion bodies in canine distemper. KEY WORDS: canine distem… Show more

“…geralmente é relacionada ao tratamento com antimicrobianos que destroem a flora microbiana normal e à imunodepressão ocasionada pela infecção viral (Gelberg 2007). Kubo et al (2007) encontrou inclusões virais na bexiga de caninos infectados pelo vírus da cinomose em 73,0% dos casos. Esse dado difere do encontrado no presente estudo onde, apenas 27,8% dos cães apresentaram corpúsculos de inclusão na bexiga.…”

“…We did not test urine samples; however, in a recent study, urine has been described as a sensitive sample for the detection of CDV in live dogs (2). Postmortem samples were from tonsils, brains, bladders, and lungs (16). Approximately 2 to 5 g of each tissue was received in tubes sent on ice by overnight delivery for virological examination.…”

“…Pancreatic lesions were frequent in this study and Tams (2005) cites that the canine distemper virus can cause pancreatitis, reinforcing the findings of this work. Lymphoid atrophy was observed in 29.4% of dogs as reported by Kubo et al (2007). Deem et al (2000) cited pneumonia in dogs with distemper as one of the important postmortem findings and in their study 52.92% of the dogs had pneumonia.…”

“…Virus inclusions bodies were identified in the bladder epithelial cells in 41.18% of the animals, and it may be considered an important microscopic finding for the diagnosis of distemper. Kubo et al (2007) observed viral inclusions bodies in the bladder of canines infected with the distemper virus in 73.0% of the cases. Sonne et al (2009) in 27.8% of the dogs and these authors associated the low frequency of inclusions in the bladder with the desquamation observed in the epithelium of the same making it impossible to visualize the inclusion bodies.…”
