Abstract:The estuarine area of the Massangana River (Pernambuco, Brazil) undergoes several kinds of interventions as a result of the activities of the Suape Industrial and Harbor Complex, which could affect local biotic communities. Thus, this study aimed to verify the composition of the benthic macrofauna of hard substrates regarding their vertical distribution in order to support the future biomonitoring of possible changes in this complex. The invertebrates found in an area of 519 m 2 were collected and their distribution on the biogenic and abiogenic substrates was described. A total of 79 species were found, primarily in the mangroves and distributed in three intertidal zones: a Chthamaletum, which comprised the intertidal and upper shore, the balanid zone, with barnacles and oysters in the mid intertidal, and the Bostrychietum, in the lowest region. In general, this matched the Brazilian and international vertical distribution patterns for mangrove invertebrates. The presence of rocky substrate and the area's high salinity made possible the occurrence of 28 species-including the coral Siderastrea stellata -in an estuarine area. The enlarged distribution of the bivalve Isognomon alatus, the barnacle Amphibalanus reticulatus, and the bryozoans Biflustra savartii, Bowerbankia gracilis, and Conopeum reticulum on the Brazilian coast can be explained by the proximity to the Port of Suape, which allows for passive transportation on ships. The scattered distribution of the fouling organisms among the substrates and the absence of characteristic animals of this ecosystem (such as the mussels) suggest that the environment is already undergoing some stress due to the diverse human interventions occurring in this area. Resumen: El área estuarina del río Massangana (Pernambuco, Brasil) está sujeta a diversas intervenciones antropomórficas resultantes de las actividades del Complejo Industrial y Portuario de Suape, que pueden afectar las comunidades bióticas. Con esa perspectiva, este estudio tuvo como finalidad verificar la composición de la macrofauna bentónica de los sustratos sólidos, en su gradiente de distribución vertical, que sirva de referencia para futuros monitoreos biológicos relacionados a los cambios que pueden ocurrir en el complejo portuario. Se colectaron los invertebrados presentes en un área de 519 m 2 y su distribución en los sustratos biogénicos y abiogénicos es mostrada en el siguiente trabajo. ABSTRACT. The occurrence and larval recruitment of Teredinidae (Mollusca, Bivalvia) in Cananeia-Iguape Coastal System, São Paulo, Brazil. The occurrence and larval settlement of Teredinidae in Cananéia-Iguape Coastal System were observed for one year, by using laminated pinewood panels installed in three stations inside the mangrove forest (intertidal zone) and in one station, in the infralittoral. In the mangrove forest, the larval colonization occurred after four months in the most frequently flooded station and after eight months in the two less frequent flooded stations. In the infralittoral, the panels were highly infested after four months. Along the experiment, the number of individuals decreased, especially in the infralittoral, possibly due to competition between teredinids and pholadids for wood. Bankia fimbriatula was the most abundant teredinid, occurring in the infralittoral and in the mangrove area, followed by Bankia gouldi and Lyrodus floridanus, which occurred only in the infralittoral and Nausitora fusticula which was found only in the mangrove forest. In total, 704 individuals of Teredinidae were collected. Martesia striata, the single pholadid, was found in the infralittoral, and totaled 2,658 individuals. RESUMO.A ocorrência e o recrutamento larval de Teredinidae na região do Sistema Costeiro Cananéia-Iguape foram acompanhados por doze meses utilizando-se coletores laminados de pinho, instalados em três estações dentro do bosque de mangue (mediolitoral) e em uma estação, localizada no infralitoral. No manguezal, a colonização por larvas de teredinídeos ocorreu após quatro meses de permanência dos coletores na estação mais frequentemente inundada pela maré e somente após oito meses nas duas estações com menor frequência de inundação. No infralitoral, após quatro meses, os coletores já estavam consideravelmente danificados. Ao longo do experimento, houve um decréscimo no número de teredinídeos, especialmente no infralitoral, ocasionado possivelmente pela competição por alimento e espaço entre teredinídeos e foladídeos. Foram encontrados 2.658 indivíduos, sendo 704 de Teredinidae e 1.954 de Pholadidae. Entre os teredinídeos, Bankia fimbriatula foi a espécie mais abundante tanto no infralitoral quanto no manguezal, seguida de Bankia gouldi e Lyrodus floridanus que ocorreram somente no infralitoral, e Nausitora fusticula encontrada somente no manguezal. Martesia striata, único foladídeo, ocorreu somente no infralitoral.

ABSTRACT. In the estuary of the Mamanguape River (Paraíba, Brazil), a new collection technique was developed and applied with virgin poles of mangrove trees Avicennia schaueriana (Verbenaceae), Rhizophora mangle (Rhizophoraceae), and Laguncularia racemosa (Combretaceae), taking into account wood preference, water salinity and depth influence during teredinid larval settlement. Sets of poles were vertically fixed in the riverbed at three sites along a decreasing salinity gradient, where they stayed for four months. The poles were collected and divided into upper, median, and lower segments, in agreement with different immersion regimes. An increase of 239% was obtained in the number of individuals when compared to a previous study in the same area using a different methodology. The species Teredo bartschi (Clapp, 1923), Nausitora fusticula (Jeffreys, 1860) and Bankia fimbriatula Moll & Roch, 1931 were registered in both studies, and the species Psiloteredo healdi (Bartsch, 1931) is here registered for the first time as occurring in that estuary. The species Neoteredo reynei (Bartsch, 1920), previously registered on tree branches of the mangrove habitat, was not found in the present work. Bankia fimbriatula, the most abundant species, did not show preference for any substratum but occurred significantly on the lower segment of the poles. N. fusticula, second in abundance, preferred to settle on poles of A. schaueriana and on any of the three segments. Aiming to assess the habitat variations, a more accurate study on teredinids diversity in mangrove ecosystems should be performed through a concomitant analysis from tree branches of the mangrove habitat, as well as from poles of mangrove trees or panels made of pine wood or mangrove trees wood. These collection devices should be maintained along a decreasing salinity gradient exposed to different tide levels. KEYWORDS. RESUMO. Interferência de métodos na coleta de teredinídios (Mollusca, Bivalvia) em habitats de manguezais.Contemplando a preferência pelo tipo de madeira, a influência da profundidade e da salinidade durante assentamento larval de teredinídeos, uma nova técnica de coleta foi aplicada e desenvolvida no estuário do rio Mamanguape (Paraíba, Brasil), utilizando varas virgens de três espécies de árvores do manguezal: Avicennia schaueriana (Verbenaceae), Rhizophora mangle (Rhizophoraceae) e Laguncularia racemosa (Combretaceae). Em três estações demarcadas ao longo do gradiente decrescente de salinidade, conjuntos de varas foram verticalmente fixados nas margens do rio. Após quatro meses, as varas eram coletadas e divididas em três segmentos (superior, médio e inferior), de acordo com os regimes de imersão a que foram submetidas.
