Diurnal asymmetry in future temperature changes over the main Belt and Road regions

Abstract: Introduction: Daily maximum (Tmax) and minimum (Tmin) temperatures and Diurnal temperature range (DTR) profoundly affect the ecological environment and socioeconomic systems. In this study, we project future changes in Tmax, Tmin and DTR for RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 using fine-resolution downscaled data from the 18global coupled models over the main regions of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Outcomes: The Multi-Model Ensemble (MME) mean projections show that future warming is stronger in Tmax than in Tmin, leadin… Show more

“…Based on downscaled data from 18 global coupled models, Zhuang and Zhang (2020) conducted highresolution projections of three climate indicators, including daily maximum temperature (T max ), daily minimum temperature (T min ), and diurnal temperature range (DTR), in the main BRI regions in the two periods of 2020-2039 and 2080-2099 for the Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and 8.5 relative to the historical period 1986-2005. Results show that the mean observed T max , T min , and DTR from 1986 to 2005 in main BRI regions are 17.88°C, 6.56°C, and 11.31°C, respectively.…”

“…In terms of temperature evolution breakpoints, a variety of statistical methods are mainly used to analyze whether there is heterogeneity or mutation point in the meteorological data series, or to detect the mutation time [14]. The asymmetry of temperature is mainly to study the relationship between daily maximum temperature, minimum temperature and the temperature difference between day and night [15], to formulate appropriate strategies to deal with climate change.…”

“…These result in day-to-day variability of maximum and minimum air temperatures. It is also worth emphasizing that variations in minimum temperatures are usually greater than those in maximum temperatures [3,4]. The variability of such changes in a year is probably uneven.…”
