Diversification and market entry choices in the context of foreign direct investment

Abstract: Multinational enterprises consider many factors when making decisions in the context of foreign direct investment (FDI). In deciding what to produce, the multinational enterprise (MNE) must decide whether to diversify or to concentration on its main line of business. This paper offers insights into influences on this choice, and identifies a number of conditions under which diversification is more likely to be chosen. Factors affecting the foreign entry mode decision are also analyzed. The international busine… Show more

“…The results remain similar to the ones presented in table 8, indicating that our suggestions for a closer cooperation between MNEs and domestic partners can lead to higher performance. Again the MNE variable has a strong positive sign suggesting that MNEs outperform their domestic counterparts (Dimelis and Louri, 2002;Kyrkilis and Pantelidis, 1994;Mudambi and Mudambi, 2002;Wheeler and Mody, 1992). Again breaking up the variable to majority and minority ownership suggest that the use of a local partner would lead to improvements in performance through the acquisition of local knowledge (Chen and Dimou, 2005;Chhibber and Majumdar, 1999;Doz, 1986;Lu and Beamish, 2004).…”
