Diversifying agrifood systems to ensure global food security following the Russia–Ukraine crisis

Abstract: The recent Russia–Ukraine conflict has raised significant concerns about global food security, leaving many countries with restricted access to imported staple food crops, particularly wheat and sunflower oil, sending food prices soaring with other adverse consequences in the food supply chain. ESCWA/UNDP (2023) warns that resultant inflationary trend would have implications for the broader economic stability of the MENA countries, and might lead to additional stress on both local and refugee populations who have already been facing an increased cost of living.…”

“…According to The Global Report on Food Crises 2023 1 jointly published by several international organizations, including the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the demand has fueled concerns about global food shortages, which, in turn, have intensified global capital speculation in the food market. Under the superimposed influence of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and extreme weather events, food export restrictions and excessive futures speculation have triggered sharp increases and subsequent dramatic fluctuations in international food prices, further exacerbating risks in the global food market (Neik et al, 2023).…”
