Diversity and Structure of Social Wasps Community (Hymenoptera: Vespidae, Polistinae) in Neotropical Dry Forest

Abstract: Social wasps are potential predators of agricultural pest species. The objective of this study was to conduct a survey of the community of social wasps (Polistinae species) that inhabit the neotropical dry forest named Caatinga of Paraiba, Northeast of South America (Brazil), and to compare the richness and abundance of wasps located in areas of Caatinga with those inhabiting areas of organic intercropping farming. The present study sampled 10 Polistinae species distributed in six genera. Two new species were … Show more

“…The active collection method was most frequently used in the Northeast. Such method is considered the most efficient when compared to other methods (Silveira, 2002;Jacques et al, 2018), especially for semi deciduous forests and savannas since it samples species exclusive to this method, as well as species collected in the other methods (Elpino-Campos et al, 2007;Souza et al, 2011;Elisei et al, 2017).…”

“…We did not find any standardization for the collection methods adopted in the research, especially for the passive collection methods. The methods differ regarding the duration of active collections in the field (Melo et al, 2005;Santos et al, 2006;Santos et al, 2007a;Virginio et al, 2017) and in the association of different methods (Andena & Carpenter, 2014;Aragão & Andena, 2016;Elisei et al, 2017;Somavilla et al, 2017). This affects the evaluation of efficiency of such methods and makes it impossible to determine which of those used in the northeast were more or less efficient in collecting wasps.…”

“…Currently, 91 species of social wasps are identified in this biome (Dos Santos et al, 2020). Typically, communities in the biome show a low alpha diversity compared with regional beta diversity (e.g., Elisei et al, 2017; Melo et al, 2015; Rocha & Silveira, 2014; Santos et al, 2006).…”

“…Most of studies dealing with community structure of social wasps carried out in Brazil are focused in natural environments (Silveira, 2002;Silva-Pereira & Santos, 2006;Souza & Prezoto, 2006;Elpino-Campos et al, 2007;Santos et al, 2007;Silveira et al, 2008;Gomes & Noll, 2009;Silva & Silveira, 2009;Santos et al, 2009;Arab et al, 2010;Prezoto & Clemente, 2010;Souza et al, 2010;Bonfim & Antonialli Junior, 2012;Simões et al, 2012;Souza et al, 2012;Gradinete & Noll, 2013;Locher et al, 2014;Souza et al, 2014aSouza et al, , 2014bTogni et al, 2014;Somavilla et al, 2014Somavilla et al, , 2015Brunismann et al, 2016;Elisei et al, 2017). The polistine fauna of anthropized areas, however, is still poorly investigated (Jacques et al, 2012(Jacques et al, , 2015Oliveira et al, 2017).…”
