DNA dot‐blot hybridization implicates human papillomavirus type 11‐DNA in epithelioma cuniculatum

Abstract: Epithelioma cuniculatum is a rare, low-grade squamous cell carcinoma, belonging to the group of verrucous carcinomas. Evidence is presented that suggests that human papilloma virus type-11 may be involved in the pathogenesis of epithelioma cuniculatum. HPV-DNA was detected by dot-blot hybridization with 32P-labelled probe DNA. Plasmids containing HPV-DNA were isolated by the benzoylated naphthoylated DEAE cellulose method (BND-method), an improved procedure for routine detection of HPV-DNA.

“…A link to human papillomavirus (HPV) type-11 has also been suggested [17]. So far, the association of CC with low risk HPV has been site-specific, being reported only in cutaneous sites [17]. In both our cases, there was no significant expression of p16 on immunohistochemistry, arguing against high risk HPV as an etiological factor.…”

“…Etiopathogenetic possibilities that have been discussed by various investigators include smoking, alcohol, reflux and chronic ulcers [2,3,16]. “…Whilst the presence of HPV DNA has been demonstrated in CC at cutaneous sites [10,11] [6,9]. Therefore, the association of HPV and CC remains, at best, a site-specific observation.…”

“…The importance of human papillomavirus in carcinoma cuniculatum in the literature is equivocal. 16,17 The differential diagnoses for carcinoma cuniculatum of the penis include classic verrucous carcinoma, mixed verrucous carcinoma and condylomatous carcinoma. The nomenclature and morphologic definition of carcinoma cuniculatum is not uniform, and some authors have even equated it with verrucous carcinoma.…”
