DNA footprints of European hedgehogs, Erinaceus europaeus and E. concolor: Pleistocene refugia, postglacial expansion and colonization routes

Abstract: European hedgehogs, Erinaceus europaeus and E. concolor , are among the many European plant and animal taxa that have been subjected to cyclical restriction to glacial refugia and interglacial expansion. An analysis of 95 mitotypes, comprising partial cytochrome b and control region sequences, shows deep divergence between the two hedgehog species. Three europaeus and two concolor clades are clearly identified and are consistent with previously identified refugia for Europe: the Iberian peninsula, Italy, and t… Show more

“…Moreover, to the exception of some data obtained on the hedgehog (Santucci et al, 1998;Seddon et al, 2001), the woodmouse (Michaux et al, 2003) and the lesser white-toothed shrew (Taberlet et al, 1998), very little information exists concerning the role of Turkey and Near East regions as refugia for European mammals during glaciations as well as their role as a source for postglacial recolonisers of the Western Palearctic region.…”

“…For amplification of the 5¢ segment of the mitochondrial control region (410 bp), including the left hypervariable domain, we used the primers ProL-He, which was located in the tRNA Pro gene region, and DLH-He, which was located in the conserved sequence block of the E region (Seddon et al, 2001). Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) conditions were set according to Seddon et al (2001).…”

“…As insectivores, the hedgehogs were undoubtedly greatly influenced by climate-dependent changes in the availability of insect food during the Quaternary period and the dramatic range dynamic must have left clear imprints in the genetic architecture of this taxon (Santucci et al, 1998;Seddon et al, 2001Seddon et al, , 2002Berggren et al, 2005). Recently, three species of the genus Erinaceus were recognised in the western Palearctic (Aulagnier et al, 2009).…”

There is, however, a paucity of studies bringing together these two approaches, that is, searching for general patterns in the origin and the phylogenetic and phylogeographic relationships in relatively rich groups of organisms with Iberian representation (but see e.g.…”
