Do Learning & Teaching Styles Affect Students Performance? An Empirical Study

Abstract: The ways in which students normally obtain, retain, and get back information are defined as the students’ learning style.  Mismatches often occur between the learning styles of students in a Basic Statistics class and the teaching style of the instructor, with adverse effects on the quality of the students’ learning and on their attitudes toward the class and the subject.  The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not congruency of learning and teaching styles improve students’ performance in my Ba… Show more

“…Earlier studies acknowledged that diversity plays an important role in students' learning (Kamuche, 2005;Shaw, 2005;Sulkowinski & Deakin, 2009;Boland, Sugahara, Opdecam, & Everaert, 2011;Nield, 2004). Sulkowinski and Deakin (2009) argue that cultural understanding enhances students' learning whereby there is an evidence of a positive correlation between culture and learning approaches.…”

“…Students commented that video and recorded lectures along with online D2L classes would help improve M-Learning [8]. Felix Kamuche [20] argues "This study provides clear evidence that faculty can use learning styles data to help them design creative matches with students learning preferences. …Clearly, the author can say students learned better when instruction was geared toward their learning style".…”

“…Fraser and her colleagues specifically demonstrated RI with medical students training on different cardiac murmurs. Oftentimes educational researchers discuss retrieval and forgetting in terms of working memory capacity (Graf, Lin, & Kinshuk, 2008;Alloway, 2006;Rassaian, 2001), student learning style (Kazu, 2009;Kamuche, 2005), and differentiated teaching style (Brock &Joglekar, 2011;Coller & Shernoff, 2009;Michel, Cater, & Varela, 2009). …”

“…Kazu (2009) explained that students learn differently due to many different cognitive learning processes, therefore Kazu asserts that all students should be accurately assessed in order to provide an adequate mode of teaching. Kamuche (2005) described that learning style is important but teaching style is equally important. For example, students performed better on a statistics test when their learning style was matched to a similar teaching style compared to unmatched students and teachers (Kamuche, 2005).…”
