Do Mendeley reader counts indicate the value of arts and humanities research?

Abstract: Mendeley reader counts are a good source of early impact evidence for the life and natural sciences articles because they are abundant, appear before citations, and correlate moderately or strongly with citations in the long term. Early studies have found less promising results for the humanities and this article assesses whether the situation has now changed. Using Mendeley reader counts for articles in twelve arts and humanities Scopus subcategories, the results show that Mendeley reader counts reflect Scopu… Show more

“…An exception to the above conclusion is that a previous study claimed that Mendeley readers were as useful in the arts and humanities as elsewhere (Thelwall, 2019). The above results suggest that this is false because Mendeley is of little use in the arts and humanities as a quality indicator.…”

“…This might be because Mendeley is a reference manager and humanities reference styles are often based on discussions in footnotes rather than standard format references. Thus, Mendeley is less useful to such scholars and its records may be sparser (Thelwall, 2019). The relatively low correlations for Mendeley in Mathematical Sciences and Computer Science and Informatics are presumably due to the LaTeX document formatting language commonly used in these areas (also in parts of Physics), for which Mendeley would be less use.…”

“…Another topic of research examines the different metric systems that not only measure publications and citations but sometimes also user activity within the tool (Ovadia, 2014). Reading activity monitored in platforms such as Mendeley can, for example, provide good early impact evidence as this metrics appear before citations and correlate with citations in the long term (Thelwall, 2019). Sharing research data also becomes part of this metric when data, such as publications, are given unique DOIs and can be cited.…”
