Do roadkill aggregations of wild and domestic mammals overlap?

Abstract: Domestic animals are involved in a large number of traffic accidents and they represent danger to humans due to their size. Despite this, few studies consider domestic animals. That is why we evaluate mammals’ roadkill aggregations in order to locate them and to determine if wild and domestic mammals’ roadkills overlap. In addition, we investigate the influence of the landscape on the location of the aggregations. This study was carried out on the BR-050 highway, an area of Cerrado biome, in Southeastern Brazi… Show more

“…O Cerrado brasileiro, compreende uma região altamente fragmentada (Carvalho et al 2009), que abriga a terceira maior riqueza de mamíferos brasileiros: 251 espécies, das quais 32 são endêmicas (Paglia et al 2012). No entanto, poucos estudos têm relatado o efeito dos atropelamentos rodoviários sobre a fauna de mamíferos do Cerrado (Cáceres et al 2010, Zanzini et al 2018, Carvalho-Roel et al 2019.…”

“…The taxonomic-based identification of AVC clusters is popularly used in many road kill surveys and observations [ 12 , 34 , 64 , 122 ]. Strict focuses on basing road kill counts or clusters to specific taxonomic groups overlooks the spatiotemporal patterns of mortalities [ 1 ].…”

“…Domestic animals are generally not dominant in animal-vehicle collisions, and thus are only analyzed in a few studies. For example, in a roadkill study in Brazil, domestic animals accounted for 34% of the total [26], and in Korea, a proportion of 27.0% was found [27]. In Tanzania, domestic animals accounted for only 6.25% of roadkilled mammals [28].…”
