Does Addition of Propolis to Glass Ionomer Cement Alter its Physicomechanical Properties? An in Vitro Study

Abstract: In comparison to the control group, incorporation of propolis to conventional restorative glass ionomer cement decreased the compressive strength significantly. The solubility of the cement in the experimental group increased significantly over 7day period as compared to the control group.

“…The compressive strength of the GIC-BPE sample was lower than that of the GIC sample. Similar results were reportedly found for other additives, including propolis, antimicrobials and bioactive glasses 16,54,55 . Whatever its chemical origin is, this trend to lower its therapeutic strength is widespread and is characteristically associated www.nature.com/scientificreports/ to the inhibition of the setting reaction due to the presence of the additive.…”

“…Recently, the direction toward natural products for medicinal purposes have gained much attention, as these natural products has proved to be effective with less toxic side effects, and thus can be used as an alternative source of treatment (2). Propolis is a natural gummy substance produced by honeybees as a result of the salivary enzymatic reaction of the bees on the plant exudates, it has been used widely in traditional medicine since ages ago mainly due to its high antioxidant properties (3).Studies have also shown other important properties in propolis such as antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, anesthetic, and ability to promote healing (1,4,5).…”
