Does coronal oblique length of spleen on CT reflect splenic index?

Abstract: Coronal oblique dimension of spleen >12 cm is highly sensitive and shows good positive predictive value in diagnosing splenomegaly but has poor specificity and negative predictive value. Ideally, splenic index calculated using the CC, width, and thickness is the most reliable measurement for diagnosing splenomegaly. But if single measurements are to be used for identifying splenomegaly, craniocaudal length >9.5 cm, width of >10.6 cm, and coronal oblique dimension >12 cm may be used.

“…In fact, ideally, splenic index calculated for the splenic volume, using the craniocaudal dimension, width, and thickness, would be the most reliable measurement for diagnosing splenomegaly. However, according to literature [18][19][20]31 , a single measurement, for example the craniocaudal length, is not different to emphasise the splenic index from the one calculated for the splenic volume.…”

“…Out of 105 patients, 85 of them underwent endoscopic evaluation for varices prior to AB treatment. To assess splenomegaly, we calculated the splenic index based on the formula (craniocaudal dimension × width × thickness) and defined patients with splenomegaly as having a splenic index > 480 (12).…”

“…Participants were excluded from this study if they had white blood cell (WBC) count, mean corpuscular volume, hemoglobin level, platelets count, lactic acid dehydrogenase, creatinine, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, and total bilirubin levels in their blood data that are not in the normal range (Table 1). No participant had splenomegaly on CT [18]. All the participants were considered healthy without clinical suspicion of malignancy or a severe inflammatory condition based on the diagnosis by experienced physicians who performed medical interviews and physical examinations, and imaging diagnostic radiologists who diagnosed them comprehensively.…”

“…All the patients fasted for at least 6 h before 18 F-FDG (3 MBq/kg) administration. Whole-body PET/CT scans were performed at 60-min post injection using a Biograph Horizon TrueV FDG-PET/CT system (Siemens Medical Solutions, Knoxville, TN, USA).…”
