Does growth rhythm of a widespread species change in distinct growth sites?

Abstract: This study is aimed to understand responses in growth rhythm to different climatic conditions of the widespread deciduous species Cedrela odorata. Our own research was conducted in Nova Iguaçu. Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil) and compared with literature data from Aripuanã. Mato Grosso State, Brazil), Manaus. Amazonas State, Brazil) and Barinas. Barinas State, Venezuela). Growth periodicity was evaluated through leaf phenological behavior and radial growth. In Nova Iguaçu, leaf phenology was monitored monthly an… Show more

“…Regarding the functional type, the results show that K. grandiflora is a deciduous species. Similar results were found in K. coriacea, a sympatric deciduous species, where the leafless period ranged between 20 and 30 days (see Coradin 2000;Lenza and Klink 2006). In K. grandiflora, the onset of cambial activity in the main stem occurred when the new leaves were completing their development, 2 months after leaf primordium emergence.…”

“…There is also a seasonal variation in temperature between summer and winter: the summers are hot and winters are cold (Coutinho 2002). As the Cerrado has many species with signs of seasonal apical and lateral growth (see Coradin 2000;Rivera et al 2002;Marcati et al 2006b), it is an ideal environment to study the relationships between seasonal weather and periodic growth.…”

“…O padrão evidenciado sugere que, apesar de estar em um ambiente favorável ao crescimento -sem uma estação seca definida, os indivíduos apresentam uma natureza conservativa da espécie concernente a manutenção do crescimento sazonal (Costa et al, 2013). A formação anual do anel de crescimento nos dois ambientes ocorreu de maneira semelhante àquela observada por Marcati et al (2006) para a espécie crescendo em floresta sazonal semidecidual.…”

“…Cedrela is a genus of deciduous behavior occurring in Ombrophilous and Seasonal Forests, as well as in Brazilian Cerrado and Caatinga (Muellner et al, 2010;Flores, 2018). In regions where there are droughts, there is a clear seasonality of the growth determined by leaf abscission and cambial dormancy in the driest period (Costa et al, 2013). In regions where temperatures are seasonal, the cold period is decisive (Jeong et al, 2011).…”
