“…The malignant potential of this tumor has not been well defined. Enterline et al 24 described the case of an enlarging retropharyngeal mass in a 57-year-old man that was excised because of progressive dyspnea and dysphagia. Histologically, the tumor contained various areas closely resembling a hibernoma and pleomorphic areas reminiscent of a well-differentiated liposarcoma.…”

“…Hibernoma is a benign tumour; however, there has been a reported case of hibernoma with an infiltrative pattern and cellular atypia,15 areas of hibernoma and areas consistent with a well-differentiated liposarcoma. Work up in a patient with a suspected fat-containing lesion includes complete history and examination with imaging; fine-needle aspiration cytology is non-diagnostic and core biopsy is discouraged due to the potential of haemorrhage owing to its internal vascularity,8 as also reported in one case leading to excessive bleeding 16…”

“…The malignant potential of hibernomas has been debated, however, most agree this tumor is completely benign. Enterline et al reported a case of retropharyngeal hibernoma with cellular atypia and an infiltrative pattern; however, metastasis has never been reported. Complicating the matter, hibernomas often closely resemble well‐differentiated and myxoid liposarcomas, which behave much differently.…”
