Does marital status matter in an HIV hyperendemic country? Findings from the 2012 South African National HIV Prevalence, Incidence and Behaviour Survey

Abstract: Recently, South Africa has experienced declining marriage rates and the increasing practice of cohabitation without marriage. This study aims to improve the understanding of the relationship between marital status and HIV in South Africa, an HIV hyperendemic country, through an analysis of findings from the 2012 South African National HIV Prevalence, Incidence and Behaviour Survey. The nationally representative population-based cross-sectional survey collected data on HIV and socio-demographic and behavioural … Show more

“…It is possible the increased T1 intensity indices may be from one of these other sources of T1 signal change; however, there has been no evidence of blood, melanin, or lipid accumulating lesions in Mn neurotoxicity. HIV infection is a potential concern in these mine workers as the prevalence of HIV is high in South Africa 40 , but there were no HIV pathologies identified in this cohort. Olanow et al 14 documented no difference in tissue Mn in their Mn-exposed animals but noted aluminum and Fe accumulation in the globus pallidus and substantia nigra pars reticularis.…”

“…We limited our analysis to the 13,884 individuals aged 15 to 55 years old who agreed to HIV testing. For more detailed information about the survey methodology see Shisana et al[39, 40]…”

“…Because comparable cross-country estimates of circular migration do not exist[27], in the second part of the study, we examine the relationship between circular migration and HIV in both South Africa’s nine provinces and ethnic groups. Adult HIV prevalence varies by up to a factor of five between South Africa’s provinces and a factor of 40 between its ethnic groups[28]. High migration intensity is one of the factors that have been put forward to explain differential HIV spread in the country[23].…”

“…Notwithstanding, it is interesting to note that the figure more closely resembles the national HIV prevalence estimate of 32.7% among black, anatomically female women, aged 20-34, than it does the national HIV prevalence estimate of 9.9% among a heterogeneous category, with respect to both age and race, of MSM. 66 The similarity between the prevalence figures of black gay men and black women is striking, especially given the preponderance of ethnographic as well as cultural knowledge that troubles any homogenous epidemiological coding of MSM. The comparability of these figures is admittedly spurious, and I would not suggest making any conclusions about the shape of the HIV epidemic in South Africa based on such a comparison.…”
