Does pomegranate extract supplementation improve the clinical symptoms of patients with allergic asthma? A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial

Abstract: Background: Asthma essentially represents a chronic inflammatory disease that manifests as a lifelong condition with different severity throughout the life of patients with asthma. Pomegranate holds three times the antioxidant activity compared to other polyphenol-rich food sources like green tea, which may positively impact asthma.Aim of the study: This research aimed to investigate the pomegranate supplementation influences clinical symptoms, eosinophil, basophil, and neutrophil counts in patients with aller… Show more

“…Phytochemicals such as flavonoids and polyphenols, abundant in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, have anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, inhibiting inflammatory pathways and reducing the production of inflammatory cytokines. Clinical trials in Iran found that pomegranate supplements can improve clinical symptoms in allergic asthma patients and decrease counts of eosinophils, basophils, and neutrophils, likely through its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties ( 43 ). These findings suggest that modifying dietary structures and supplementing with specific vitamins, trace elements, and phytochemicals may aid in preventing or mitigating the risk of AR.…”

“…Green tea contains a substantial amount of polyphenols, including catechin, EC, GC, EGC, ECG, and EGCG, along with high amounts of caffeine [ 30 ]. Polyphenols in green tea provide photoprotective [ 31 ] and antioxidant [ 32 ] effects, and have shown a positive impact on asthma [ 33 ]. Several previous studies have examined the anti-allergic effects of polyphenols derived from green tea.…”

“…Subsequently, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted in adults with persistent allergic asthma to assess the therapeutic activity of a pomegranate extract which is known to exhibit three times the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity of other polyphenol-rich food sources [300]. The findings have revealed that patients in the intervention group receiving supplementation with pomegranate extract (500 mg/day for 8 weeks) reported significantly fewer clinical symptoms, including daytime and nighttime shortness of breath as well as activity limitation due to asthma symptoms when compared to the control group [301].…”
