Does Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE) Improve Voiding Symptoms, Storage Symptoms, or Both?

Abstract: Introduction Many studies have looked at global changes in the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) following PAE; however, no studies have examined the breakdown between storage and voiding symptoms. We aimed to explore the extent to which PAE improves storage symptoms in relation to voiding symptoms. Method This single-center, prospective cohort study recruited consecutive patients undergoing PAE from June 2012 to June 2016. The IPSS breakdown was recorded pre-PAE, at 3 months and 12 months post-PAE. … Show more

“…We noticed an improvement in both voiding and storage symptoms as reflected by the IPSS score. A slightly better improvement in the voiding score compared to the storage score was observed like other published studies [8,9]. One of our patients has noticed an improvement in sexual function as reflected by the IIEF score.…”

“…Identifying a differential symptom profile is important because it could identify patients who would be more suited to PAE over surgery. Three recent studies examined how the IPSS (International Prostate Symptom Score) breakdown changes with PAE and identified a significant reduction in both storage and voiding symptoms [10][11][12]. TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate) is also known to have an impact on both symptom types, but several papers have identified a reduced impact on storage symptoms [13,14].…”

“…Au contraire, plus la prostate est volumineuse, meilleurs sont les effets du traitement [11]. Cette méthode est particulièrement adaptée aux patients présentant des troubles de stockage prédominants (impériosité mictionnelle, nycturie et pollakiurie) [12].…”
