Dohaekseunggi-tang extract inhibits obesity, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension in high-fat diet-induced obese mice

Abstract: BackgroundDohaekseunggi-tang (DHSGT) is a traditional plant-based medicine prescribed to promote blood circulation and to treat obesity and hypertension. The present study aimed to identify potential anti-obesity activities of DHSGT extract.MethodsAnti-obesity, anti-hyperlipidemic, and anti-hypertensive effects of orally-administered DHSGT extract were evaluated in high-fat diet- (HFD)-induced obese mice. Serum biochemistry profiles and expression of diverse metabolic regulatory gene mRNAs in mouse visceral fa… Show more

“…As shown in Table 3, the extract mixture had the most impact on adiponectin-mediated cardio protection when compared with treatments of saffron stigma and petal alone. Other studies have demonstrated that some herbs lower leptin and raise adiponectin synthesis in fat tissues resulting in a measurable change in sera levels (27,28). We further investigated the serum levels of two other hormones, insulin and resistin, which are related to obesity induced through insulin resistance (9).…”

“…Hwangryunhaedok-tang (Orengedokuto) inhibited differentiation and lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes [ 21 , 22 ] and lowered body weight and waist circumstance in abdominally obese patients [ 9 ]. Bangpungtongseong-san (Bofu-tsusho-san) [ 23 ] and Dohaekseunggi-tang [ 24 ] attenuated metabolic disorders, including hypertension and visceral obesity.…”

“…In obese mice injected with CST, the expression levels of obesity-related genes were reduced in the hypothalamus; the expression levels of obesity-inhibiting genes were enhanced; the gene expression of an adipokine that promotes obesity, RBP-4, effectively decreased; the gene expression of adiponectin, an adipokine that inhibits obesity, significantly increased; intestinal microbiota beneficial to the body increased in the CST treatment group as observed in the DSHT experiment, Koh et al [ 88 ] injected Yangkyuksanwha-tang (YST) to high-fat diet-induced obese mice for six weeks and reported that the body weight and levels of blood glucose, total cholesterol, neutral fats, and LDL-cholesterol were decreased; HDL-cholesterol was increased; adipose tissues and weights of various organs decreased; the gene expression of leptin decreased; and the gene expression of adiponectin increased. Sung et al [ 89 ] examined the antiobesity, antihyperlipidemic, and antihypertensive effects of Dohaekseunggi-tang (DHSGT) on high-fat diet-induced obese mice. When DHSGT was orally administered to mice, their body weight, liver and adipose tissue mass, size of adipose tissue, and blood pressure decreased when compared to the mice in the control group.…”
