Anomie and Psychological Violence as Predictors of Perpetrated Physical Violence in Close Relationships by Female Adults

The aim of this research was to examine the predictive power of the anomie and dimensions of psychological violence in predicting perpetrated physical violence by female adults. The sample was convenient and consisted of 341 female adults, aged 18 to 65 years (M = 25.04, SD = 8.97). Anomie was assessed by the scores on the Perception of Anomie Scale. Violent behavior was assessed by The Violent Behavior Questionnaire among adults (VBQ; dimensions: mocking and making rough jokes, machinations and plotting and insulting and threatening (psychological violence), light hitting, poking, pushing and beating with or without objects (physical violence)). Two hierarchical regression analyses were conducted. In the first model age was included, in the second anomie and in the third dimensions of psychological violence. The results suggest a significant model for light hitting, teasing, pushing away (R2 = .37, F(5,335) = 39.93, p < .001) with anomie (β = .12, p = .006), mocking and making rough jokes (β = .29, p < .001) and insulting and threatening (β = .33, p < .001) being the significant predictors. The results also suggest a significant model for beating with or without objects (R2 = .23, F(5,335) = 20.19, p < .001) with age (β = .15, p = .004), anomie (β = .10, p = .044), machinations and plotting (β = .15, p = .012) and insulting and threatening (β = .29, p < .001) being the significant predictors. The results indicate the connection of different forms of violent behavior. In addition, they show the importance of the wider social context in predicting violent behavior e.g., the personal experience of alienation from society in which the individual lives.

Domestic violence, regardless of how it is manifested, represents a phenomenon which has recently attracted more and more significant doctrinal and media attention and it is a very complex problem. There are numerous questions about domestic violence to which this paper tried to provide answers. However, it is important to point out that domestic violence is not the only type of violence to which a child can be exposed, or to which he/she can be connected in an indirect or direct way. Bearing in mind that one form of violence predominantly causes and entails the other forms of violence to which a child can be exposed, and even find him/herself in the capacity of being a bully, the authors of the paper considered it important to briefly mention the other forms of violence in which the center of attention can be the child, such as digital violence and violence in schools. The focus of the paper has certainly concerned the position of the child in situations where violence against one of the parents (mostly against the mother) by the other parent (mostly the father) occurs. The conclusion is that the direct or indirect child's presence and/or his/her knowledge of the violence suffered by the mother is actually an extremely negative pattern of behavior being adopted by the majority of children during their development.

Family violence (FV), a well-recognised social problem, can interfere with the student's adaptation during their academic lives. This study assessed the prevalence of FV against Saudi female university students. A convenient sample technique was used to recruit a total of 824 female students to fill a self-administered questionnaire. About 20% of the participants experienced FV. Nearly 54% and 28.2% of them talked about the incident with family member and physician, respectively. Parenteral psychological abuse was the most common way of exposure (55%). The psychological impacts of FV were the most experienced effect in the form of stress (86.25%) and sleep disturbance (72.4%). Ignoring the incident (75.6%) was the most preferred students' response. Studying in science-related specialities, achieving low-grade point of achievement, and living with families increased students' exposure to FV. This study sheds light on FV problem among university female students in Saudi population and urges the Student's University Counselling Center to reach and give life-long support of abused students, hence ensuring their psychological health and safety.
