Doppler ultrasonographic studies of the uterine blood flow in mares

Abstract: The uterine arteries of ten mares, from which endometrial biopsies had been taken and graded from category I to category ill, were investigated on a daily basis for an entire cycle using transrectal Doppler ultrasonography. All mares showed a similar cycllc variation in uterine blood flow. Resistance to blood flow in the uterine artery was highest in the periovulatory period. The mares of category llb and lll (group B) had higher values of uterine artery impedance when compared to those mares in category | to … Show more

“…Age-related differences in RI were not observed in this study. In contrast, Blaich et al (1999) demonstrated that nonpregnant, older mares with Category IIB or III endometrial biopsy scores had higher UA RI than young, healthy mares. Grüninger et al (1998) suggested that pathological changes within the endometrial vasculature caused high vascular impedance, and is consistent with results from nonpregnant, infertile women (Dickey 1997;Ferreira et al 2007).…”

“…Doppler ultrasound is now being applied in equine reproduction. Nonpregnant, aged mares with endometrosis have high UA vascular resistance compared with young, reproductively healthy mares (Bollwein et al 1998;Blaich et al 1999). Age related degeneration of the equine endometrium may contribute to poor uterine perfusion but this has not been measured during pregnancy.…”

“…It is noninvasive, can be rapidly performed and is a valuable predictor of pre‐eclampsia and intrauterine growth retardation well before clinical signs of disease are evident. Studies in the horse have established normal values for blood flow in the uterine arteries of the nongravid and gravid horns throughout pregnancy . Significant changes in blood flow of the ipsilateral and contralateral uterine arteries have been reported at the time of experimentally induced embryonic death in the horse .…”

“…The alterations are closely related to endometrosis and result in a decreased endometrial perfusion and drainage (Schoon et al 1997a, 1999a. Blaich et al (1999) demonstrated by Doppler sonography that a marked fibrosis in the A. uterina is associated with an enhanced vascular resistance. Furthermore, endometrial angiopathies have (Kersten 2000, Schoon and.…”
