Parica culture has the potential to overcome problems in parica seed germination. One factor that influences the successful initiation of parica culture is the process of sterilization and pre-treatment in the form of breaking seed dormancy. This paper aims to analyze the effect of the immersion time of parica seeds on the germination rate of parica seeds. The explants used were parica seeds with a size of ± 2 cm. Seeds are given pre-treatment, the seeds are immersed in hot water at around 70°C for 10 minutes, the immersion time in hot water is 3, 6, 12, and 24 hours according to treatment. The variables observed were the first time the parica seeds germinated, the percentage of germinated seeds, the percentage of contamination (fungi, bacteria), and the percentage of browning. The results showed that the immersion time for pre-treatment affected the success of parica seed initiation, especially seed germination. The 3-hour immersion treatment used resulted in the highest germination of parica seeds (55%) and significantly differed from the germination rates in other immersion times. Based on the high germination rate and low level of contamination, this becomes prospectively to provide optimal in vitro parica germination.

Paricá (Schizolobium parahyba var. amazonicum) é uma espécie florestal pioneira, com potencial econômico, amplamente utilizada pelo setor madeireiro. As sementes apresentam dormência tegumentar, o que pode ser um entrave para a produção de mudas em larga escala. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a germinação de sementes de Paricá em função de diferentes volumes de água adicionados ao substrato para condução de teste de germinação. As sementes foram submetidas ao processo de desponte manual do lado oposto ao embrião para superar a dormência e depois acondicionadas em câmara de germinação, sob temperatura constante de 30 ºC e fotoperíodo de 12 horas, para a condução do teste de germinação durante 15 dias. Usou-se como substrato o papel tipo Germitest® umedecido, com quantidades (mL.g-1 papel) de água equivalentes a 2,0; 2,5; 3,0 e 3,5 vezes a massa do substrato, sem adição posterior de água. Posteriormente avaliou-se a porcentagem de germinação (GM), o índice de velocidade de germinação (IVG) e o tempo médio de germinação (TMG). O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado. Verificou-se que os maiores valores de GM e IVG foram obtidos no tratamento com volume de água equivalente a 2,5 vezes a massa do papel. O TMG foi obtido com maior precocidade nos tratamentos com quantidades de água 2,0; 2,5 e 3,0 vezes a massa do papel. Portanto, recomenda-se a condução de testes de germinação com sementes da espécie adotando o volume de água equivalente a 2,5 vezes o peso do substrato.

Schizolobium parahyba var. amazonicum (Huber ex Ducke) Barneby (Fabaceae-Caesalpinoideae) is a tree of the Amazon region with pioneer characteristics and large seeds with physical dormancy. Using Accelerated Ageing (AA) methodology, seeds were exposed to Moist Heat (40 °C; >97% Relative Humidity; RH) or Dry Heat (40 °C; 22% RH). Furthermore, it was also investigated dormancy release and the primary site of water entrance into the seeds. Seeds tolerate these conditions for up to six days without any reduction in vigour, however, only Moist Heat could overcome seed dormancy, allowing germination. The lens is the water-gap for primary water entry (where the palisade layer is thinner), as seeds with blocked lens did not imbibe. An unusual multi-layered hypodermis of osteosclereids in the seed coat was observed. Our results suggest that the combination of high temperature with high RH is a key factor involved in overcoming dormancy in the natural habitat of this Amazonian species.
