Double-pattern triangular pulse width modulation technique for high-accuracy high-speed 3D shape measurement

Abstract: Using 1-bit binary patterns for three-dimensional (3D) shape measurement has been demonstrated as being advantageous over using 8-bit sinusoidal patterns in terms of achievable speeds. However, the phase quality generated by binary pattern(s) typically are not high if only a small number of phase-shifted patterns are used. This paper proposes a method to improve the phase quality by representing each pattern with the difference of two binary patterns: the first binary pattern is generated by triangular pulse w… Show more

“…For high-accuracy applications, interferometry-based [2][3][4] and structure-light-based [5][6][7][8] techniques are commonly employed. However, in scenarios where accuracy is not the primary concern and field of view (FOV) and range are more critical, ToF-based surface measurement technique can be more appealing.…”

“…As opposed to FTP, PMP exhibits a lower speed but a higher measuring accuracy, a wider range of heights of measuring object, less effect by different reflectivity values on object surface, and less effect exerted by drastic variations or fractures on object surface [ 15 , 16 ]. The modern 3D measurement is committed to investigating a higher measuring speed, higher measuring accuracy, as well as a wider measurement application range; thus, PMP is recognized as a more effective choice [ 17 21 ].…”

“…[5] The binary defocusing techniques have been developed to break the speed bottleneck. [1,6,7] Moreover, nonlinear gamma can be eliminated automatically with 1-bit depth patterns. However, some additional issues are present and need handling: (i) the smaller depth range and (ii) the high-order harmonic error.…”
