The amount of residues generated by agriculture, industrial, or urban activities continuously increases and, consequently, demands several methods for their correct management. The incorrect disposal can cause, in specific cases, environmental contamination by heavy metals or leaching as well as promote the spread of diseases as insect proliferation. Commonly, landfilling, incinerating, composting, or energy/fuel generation can control the disposal or reuse of residues. Among the methods for the reuse of wastes, the incorporation of residues as fillers in polymer composites has emerged as a distinct field. Some composites can potentially mitigate leaching compounds or improve mechanical, thermal, and acoustic properties. However, these improvements are a challenge to promote the use of waste fillers. Thus, this study aims to provide a state of view regarding a variety of wastes used as fillers in polymer composites and different methods to reach mechanical reinforcement as well as improve thermal conductivity and acoustic attenuation for future researches.

Kraft pulp mills produce the main raw material for paper, while several waste products are generated in large quantities in the process. This review study addresses four of the main inorganic wastes formed by this industry, namely green liquor dregs (GLD), slaker grits (SG), lime mud (LM) and boiler fly ash (BFA), which are still mostly discarded in landfills. A brief overview of a typical industrial process was included to outline the waste generation points. The main chemical and physical properties are indicated for highlighting the most relevant characteristics to determine which applications may be considered in each case. An in-depth literature review allowed the identification of the main applications that have been tested mainly at the laboratory scale and some at an industrial scale. The applications are grouped into construction materials, geotechnical, environmental, agricultural and others. This assessment shows that the circular economy and the sustainable development goals of the UN are important issues for organizations in general, and the pulp mill in particular. In fact, this industry has managed to close the chemicals loops, recover energy and reduce water consumption in the process. However, the current situation of inorganic waste can still be improved if industrial applications are developed to avoid landfill.

The paper investigates the second-order interactions of parameters in an alkali-activated mixture of paper production waste (PPW) and blast furnace slag (BFS) in Taguchi method. The PPW including lime mud (LM) and paper sludge (PS). This paper provides the experimental models to assess the compressive and flexural strength of them at 7-day and 28-day. The results have shown that the second-order interactions between PPW and alkali-activated activator exists in each experimental model, and the significant interactions affect the selection of optimal compositions. Compared with the interactions between the PPW themselves, the interactions between PPW and alkali-activated parameters are the main significant factors affecting its physical properties. In each experimental model, the maximum compressive strength was 47.41 MPa in 7-day and 65.64 MPa in 28-day. Compared with the confirmatory experiments, the deviation of prediction calculated by experimental models was 3.08% and 0.56%, respectively. The maximum flexural strength was 5.74 MPa in 7-day and 5.96 MPa in 28-day; compared with the confirmatory experiments, the deviation of prediction calculated by experimental models was 5.40% and 0.17%. Considering the influence of circular materials, 30% of PPW should be a suitable ratio to replace BFS as the raw material of alkali-activated slag (AAS).
