Drilling Performance Optimization Based on Mechanical Specific Energy Technologies

Abstract: Mechanical specific energy (MSE) has been widely used to quantify drilling efficiency and maximize rate of penetration (ROP) in oil and gas wells drilling. In this chapter, MSE models respectively for directional or horizontal drilling and rotating drilling with positive displacement motor (PDM) are established based on the evaluation of virtues and defects of available MSE models. Meanwhile methods for drilling performance prediction and optimization based on MSE technologies are presented. Field data present… Show more

“…This was realized in the development of a drilling projectile with a cavitation hydraulic vibrator. The correctness of the choice of the proposed direction is confirmed by the works of researchers from the USA, Canada and China, where methods for fore casting and optimizing the technological parameters of drilling are developing in [6]. In China, a new drilling tool has been developed that generates cavitation processes by interrupting the jet and then amplifying them in a resonance chamber.…”

“…In order to quantify the effectiveness of the drilling process, in addition to the qualitative determination by means of MSE described in [39,49], an empirical coefficient of BHA unloading capacity k was introduced to pass a certain rock, which is defined as the ratio of axial and rotational energy required to destroy the rocks, taking into account its physical and mechanical properties. On the basis of field data, the model was verified and the average values of k were determined for the passage of each lithotype, at which the most effective destruction of the rock occurs.…”

“…Oscillations are generated when the bit hits the bottom hole [37]. In addition to being in the gravity field, the bit is also exposed to the forces of the bottomhole resistance to the penetration of the indenter [38,39]. Using the energy strength criterion, we find the energy stored after impact ( 9):…”

“…The concept of energy efficiency for a given activity is to utilize less energy to perform the same task. In drilling engineering, it is expressed as the required amount of energy to drill a volume of rock, termed mechanical specific energy (MSE) [39,40]. Axial and rotational energy is transferred from the surface to the drill bit via the drillstring.…”
