Driver Assistance System for Passive Multi-Trailer Vehicles with Haptic Steering Limitations on the Leading Unit

Abstract: Driving vehicles with one or more passive trailers has difficulties in both forward and backward motion due to inter-unit collisions, jackknife, and lack of visibility. Consequently, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) for multi-trailer combinations can be beneficial to accident avoidance as well as to driver comfort. The ADAS proposed in this paper aims to prevent unsafe steering commands by means of a haptic handwheel. Furthermore, when driving in reverse, the steering-wheel and pedals can be used as i… Show more

“…However, the camera does not help when the car has one or multiple trailers. Morales et al (2013) proposed a haptic solution to avoid unsafe steering movements when the car is attached to multiple passive trailers, such as for tourist road trains. Using hitch sensors, they augmented a steering wheel with force feedback to prevent drivers from exceeding the maximum rotation angles of the trailers.…”

“…The problem of reversing an articulated vehicle to follow a desired path has been investigated in the literature. There are examples of reversing controllers for the multiple-trailer case [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. In [3], a control law was defined between each consecutive trailer based on heading and heading rate errors.…”

“…A 'virtual tractor' concept was used to develop controllers in [4][5][6]. This approach treats the last trailer like a 'virtual tractor' and uses this to follow a desired path.…”

“…The ADAS proposed in [33] aims to prevent unsafe steering commands by means of a haptic handwheel. The paper addresses system requirements and provides implementation details to tele-operate two different off/on-axle combinations of a tracked mobile robot pulling and pushing two different trailers.…”
