Driving to Childhood Cancer Hub Hospitals: A Study on Hospital Accessibility in Japan

Abstract: Objective: In 2013, 15 childhood cancer hub hospitals in Japan were designated to provide quality medical treatment and care. The present study assessed hospital accessibility by investigating travel times and distances from patient residences. Methods: A total of 37,309 residence/hospital pairs were generated using the addresses of 15 hub hospitals that were designated in 2019 and local government offices in 2014. Using the Google Directions Application Programming Int… Show more

“…The most important issue in this process is efficiency. This process is mainly affected by the following aspects: (1) the specific location, grade, scale, and quantity of medical institutions (Joumard et al, 2010; Kim et al, 2011); (2) the actual situation of the urban traffic network, the distance of urban residents from urban medical institutions, and so on (Huotari et al, 2017; Tsutsui et al, 2020); (3) the residents’ own conditions, including population size, individual income, and preference for medical treatment (Kobayashi et al, 2013; Shen and Tao, 2022).…”

“…In Japan, specialized hospitals for childhood cancer have been established since 2013, when the second term of the Basic Plan to Promote Cancer Control Programs was developed [ 17 ]. The average travel duration from municipalities to the nearest specialized hospital for the 15 childhood cancer-hub hospitals is estimated at 1.8 h [ 18 ]. Most parents of children with cancer agreed with treatment centralization but disagreed with a travel duration of greater than 1 h each way [ 19 ].…”

“…In the current literature, the majority of studies on medical resources have focused on three aspects. The first aspect is analysis of the spatial distribution characteristics between medical resources and community residents, such as the spatial distribution characteristics of various health resources in cities [ 8 ], the inequality of resource distribution [ 9 ], the spatial configuration of medical resources at different levels in different regions [ 10 ], and the supply mode and accessibility to medical resources [ 11 ]. Such studies frequently use regression models, such as ordinary least squares regression (OLS) [ 12 ], geographically weighted regression (GWR) [ 13 , 14 ], and logistic regression (LR) [ 15 ], to model and explain spatial patterns.…”
